About the Item

This piece of furniture, with its unique combination of fine woods, sculptural curves, and distinctive use of brass and etched mirror—a form of craftsmanship celebrated in Italian design during the 1940s. In Europe, the Art Deco style persisted into the 1940s, especially in Italy, where it often merged with neoclassical-inspired modernism. The piece is a sideboard and, based on its design features, is an example of Italian Art Deco from the 1940s. The sideboard showcases several characteristics typical of the late Art Deco period in Italy, which often bridged the gap between the opulent Art Deco of the 1920s and 1930s and the cleaner lines of Mid-Century Modern: Rounded/Softened Lines: The curved ends and the overall aerodynamic yet voluminous shape, with "waterfall" edges, are distinctive traits of the Art Deco style from the 1930s and 1940s. Luxurious Materials and Finishes: The rich, polished teak veneer symbolizes the luxury and refinement of the Art Deco movement. Brass/Metal Details: The predominant use of gold-colored brass is characteristic of the era. This can be seen in: Extraordinary stylized vertical handles (resembling palm or banana leaves, a common stylized botanical motif in Art Deco). The horizontal brass trim along the base. The recessed top features a grooved or zigzag texture, finished in a brilliant gold/yellow tone, creating a strong geometric and material contrast. Wall Mirror: The presence of a large wall mirror with acid-etched or engraved glass featuring figurative or mythological motifs (such as the stylized animal/figure visible from the side) is very common in dining sets and Art Deco sideboards of this period, often attributed to masters like Vittorio Dassi and their contemporaries. Internal Configuration: The internal structure, visible in an image, shows a combination of spaces with shelves and a central row of wooden drawers, representing a standard and practical arrangement for a dining room sideboard used for linens, silverware, and dishes. The style perfectly captures the transition where the glamour of Art Deco meets the desire for sleeker forms, leading to the Mid-Century post-war period.
