Chinoiserie Furniture

CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Embroidered velvet ottoman in a variety of textiles by award-winning artist
Located in London, GB
The 'Peacock and Squirrel Ottoman' by award-winning, British embroidery artist and designer, Jacky Puzey. This piece is lavishly upholstered with embroidered velvet and appliqué work of silk organza, faux fur and peacock feathers. It is constructed on a wooden frame with brass wheels and comes with a similarly maximalist bolster cushion. As each piece within the edition is made to commission, uniquely bespoke touches are possible (although these may impact the list price quoted). Jacky Puzey creates statement furniture akin to richly textured artworks, combining a material palette of velvet, silk, faux fur, feathers, tweed, silk and organza with digital and hand embroidery. The animal kingdom is a constant source of inspiration, with designs that include ravens, hares, squirrels, koi carp, parakeets and peacocks. Her work may reference seventeenth-century allegorical still life paintings and eighteenth-century chinoiserie, but she also encompasses urban themes, such as London’s parakeets and the leopards that roam free in Mumbai’s suburbs. Puzey's work has been commissioned for HBO ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon...

Coffee Can Blue and White "Peony & Bamboo" Bow Porcelain, circa 1754
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
An early coffee can, painted in under-glaze blue with peonies and bamboo. The painting links with the William Pether 1754 jug. The decoration is taken directly from Chinese examples, and was intended to compete with Chinese imports. Peonies and bamboo are both commonly depicted in Chinese porcelain decoration. Peonies, also known as the "king of flowers," are often depicted in Chinese art as a symbol of wealth, nobility, and good fortune. Bamboo, on the other hand, is a symbol of integrity, resilience, and longevity. Together, peonies and bamboo are often used to symbolize the harmonious balance between wealth and integrity. Chinese porcelain with peony...
