About the Item

An Extremely Unusual Mid 19th Century Thuya Wood Veneered Rectangular Card Table, Retaining Good Colour And Surface Throughout, Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Foldover Top, Rotating To Reveal Storage Well And Old Embossed Baize Playing Surface, Raised On Elegant Silhouette End Supports, With Wavy Cross Stretcher And Four Scrolling Legs. This mid 19th century card table has some really interesting features, which make it different from the norm and quite a standout piece. It is of course veneered throughout in the beautiful wood, Thuya. Thuya wood originates from the Thuya tree, a small confifer like tree which is almost exclusively found growing of the Atlas mountains of Morocco. It was actually mentioned in the Bible, one of the few woods to have featured. Generally the part of the tree which we find featured in antique furniture is the burl, or burr, and this creates a beuatiful swirled veneer of rich colour with distinctive black dots contained within. It always has been, and still is, one of the most desirable and therefore expensive woods to purchase and therefore it very often only features in smaller decorative items, or larger items made by the top workshops of their time. Also rather unusually from a construction point of view the top, which already rotates and folds, can be entirely removed and carried around independently of the base. This appears to be perfectly original and deliberate and is something which we find very interesting. In fact overall the design of the table is quite unusual, relatively minimalistic, perhaps with the intention of allowing the beautiful thuya wood veneers to take centre stage. Contained within the top when folded open is a very old and very interesting embossed baize top. It has a striking pattern and is really rather nice. However this can be easily changed for a more standard green baize should one wish to do so. As with all items which we offer for sale this card table has been inspected buy our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish, to ensure that it is in its absolute best possible condition before being offered for sale, meaning that it is ready for immediate placement. Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...

The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian "Cosmati"-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as pietra dura, for the "hardstones" used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and colored marbles. In Florence, the Chapel of the Medici at San Lorenzo is completely covered in a colored marble facing using this demanding jig-sawn technique. Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early 16th century. The craft was imported full-blown to France after the mid-seventeenth century, to create furniture of unprecedented luxury being made at the royal manufactory of the Gobelins, charged with providing furnishings to decorate Versailles and the other royal residences of Louis XIV. Early masters of French marquetry were the Fleming Pierre Golle and his son-in-law, André-Charles Boulle, who founded a dynasty of royal and Parisian cabinet-makers (ébénistes) and gave his name to a technique of marquetry employing brass with pewter in arabesque or intricately foliate designs. Edwards & Roberts The firm Edwards & Roberts was one of the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the eighteenth century. The company was founded in 1845 and by 1854 was trading as ‘Edwards & Roberts’, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet...
