Tiled side table in stoneware was born out experiments in clay in the mid-20 century in Italy. The bold bright deep blue glazes and geometric patterns emphasize on the irregular brick work formation of the tiles and its gleaming uneven surfaces. The ceramic tiles rest on a square black metal frame. The dense ceramic is fired at high temperature to make it resistant to liquid and therefore more durable than other kinds of pottery. The stoneware tiles were made in the coastal town Albissola widely known for its pottery production. It became a prosperous hub for avant-garde ceramic art and design in the early and mid-20th century. For the past six years Portuguese designer Rui Pereira and Japanese designer Ryosuke Fukusada have been collaborating on projects that tap into their respective cultural heritage to engage users in new and unexpected design experiences. ANZA meaning ‘to sit at ease’ in Japanese, ANZA is a seating collection comprising a pouffe, bench and coffee table. The designers have updated a Kyoto-based textile, originally produced in the 18th century with a patchwork pattern, with a new color scale to match the official PWTBS color range. To complete the seating ensemble, with its high-gloss lacquer and oiled oak finishing, they have also added their own low coffee table based on a similar design vocabulary and featuring a durable Carrara marble top. This collection, part of a wider modular system, aims at enhancing both domestic and public environments.

Low tables that were initially used as tea tables or coffee tables have been around since at least the mid- to late-1800s. Visionary craftspeople such as Paul Evans introduced bold, geometric designs that challenge the traditional idea of what a coffee table can be. The elongated rectangles and wide boxy forms of Evans’s desirable Cityscape coffee table, for example, will meet your needs but undoubtedly prove imposing in your living space.
If you’re shopping for an older coffee table to bring into your home — be it an antique Georgian-style coffee table made of mahogany or walnut with decorative inlays or a classic square mid-century modern piece comprised of rosewood designed by the likes of Ettore Sottsass — there are a few things you should keep in mind.
Both the table itself and what you put on it should align with the overall design of the room, not just by what you think looks fashionable in isolation. According to interior designer Tamara Eaton, the material of your vintage coffee table is something you need to consider. “With a glass coffee table, you also have to think about the surface underneath, like the rug or floor,” she says. “With wood and stone tables, you think about what’s on top.”
