Adrian Pearsall
Adrian Pearsall designed some of the most exuberant and expressive American chairs, sofas and other furniture of the 1950s and ’60s. For verve and vivacity of form, he surpasses even Vladimir Kagan — whose work is the emblem of swinging, sexy mid-20th century modernism. Pearsall gave his imagination free rein, and his flamboyant, eye-catching styles are icons of what has become known as “Atomic Age” design.
Pearsall studied architectural engineering at the University of Illinois before opening his Pennsylvania furniture company, Craft Associates, in 1952, and that training shows in many designs.
A Pearsall trademark, for example, is a lounge chair with an exceptionally tall, trapezoidal back, which give the pieces a skyscraper-like silhouette. Pearsall also had a talent for so-called Gondola sofas — long, low-slung pieces with upswept ends. Many of Pearsall’s sofas and chairs are supported not by legs, but on gently arced walnut skids.
Pearsall had a gift for tables, too, in particular glass-topped side tables and coffee tables with frames that have the look of an Alexander Calder stabile. As you will see from the offerings on 1stDibs, Pearsall had flair, and his work adds an attention-getting, sculptural exclamation point to any décor.

Stunning vintage Mid Century Modern coffee table with a black painted wood base & a biomorphic or kidney shaped glass top in the style of Kroehler Pearsall or Tonk. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, it had a few nicks & scuffs on the black base so we gave it a fresh coat of black paint. The glass has one very small chip in edge (may be able to be sanded out) & normal scratching on surface for age. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1950’s.
What a beautiful biomorphic BEAST!!!! WOW!!! This is a marvelous vintage mid-century modern style coffee table comprised of a black painted wood base and a biomorphic or kidney shaped glass top in the style of Kroehler, Adrian Pearsall, or Tonk Manufacturing Company. This savvy little coffee table certainly took us on a wild goose chase that I’m not sure is completely over! You can find this table all over the internet attributed to Adrian Pearsall. It is NOT designed by him. Of that we are sure. But definitely in his style so it is easy to see where the misattribution comes from. It is also attributed to Valentine Seever, which is not a single person but two last names. And it may have been promoted by them as they were a division of Kroehler Manufacturing Co. It has also been attributed to Tonk Manufacturing Co., best known for their antique piano and organ swiveling stools; but we have not found actual proof of that. My mother (a “veteran” vintage...
