About the Item

This impressive, large coffee table is crafted from solid teak and carries with it a rich and layered history. Originally made around 1845 on the island of Java—then part of the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia—it was initially designed as a workbench for cigar production. Several decades ago, the piece was brought to the Netherlands, where it was thoughtfully converted into a coffee table, combining elements of its original construction with new components. The tabletop is approximately 3 cm (1.2 inches) thick and built using a beautifully paneled construction. It showcases the dense grain and deep character typical of aged teak wood. Significant traces of wear from years of use add authenticity and charm, contributing to the table’s striking patina. The table base, constructed in the Netherlands around 1920, features clean, slightly tapered legs that offer a quiet, balanced appearance. The table is equipped with two drawers, each adorned with forged iron ring pulls. These drawers, provide generous storage and reflect the piece’s functional roots. To achieve its rich, warm color, the teak was stained and lacquered several times. The finish has been maintained with wax, resulting in a deep brown hue with a soft, inviting sheen. In our workshop, the table was carefully cleaned and treated with a fresh protective wax layer to nourish the wood and enhance its natural beauty. This coffee table is not only a functional piece of furniture but also a testament to history and craftsmanship—clean, sturdy, and fully ready for use in a contemporary home with character.
