An « Artona » coffee table by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, 1975

About the Item

An « Artona » coffee table by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, 1975. In teak wood with an ebonized double stripe down the center and sides of table, and featuring unique architectural craftsmanship, this table is an incredible early piece by the iconic Scarpa duo. The son of renowned Italian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa began his career as a glass designer for Murano, later linking with Afra after they both earned degrees from the prestigious Università Iuav di Venezia in 1957. Together they began one of the greatest design partnerships of the 20th century, producing furniture for B&B Italia and Knoll, and having their work shown at MoMa and the Louvre. The ‘Artona’ line by the Scarpa duo was in fact the first line ever produced by Maxalto, the specialist division of B&B Italia. Maxalto was originally set up in 1975 as a high-end division of B&B Italia to focus exclusively on the production of artisanal, mostly wood furniture. The ‘Artona’ was their first project and also functions as a counter-message against the common prevailing use of plastics in furniture design during the Postwar period.
