About the Item

Original Vladimir Kagan bench for Grosfeld House. Both sculptural and functional, the design conveys a sense of movement in wood. The base is carved in a sculptural arc, its angled struts giving the bench a poised, elevated stance. The plank top is constructed of five boards with softened corners and edge-lipped ends, floating just above the frame with a slight bevel. This design reflects the early American modern shift away from rectilinear mass toward organic dynamism, situating Kagan as a counterpart to contemporaries like Nakashima and Wormley. Rare to find this form in solid walnut with such well-preserved age and surface character. Literature: The Complete Kagan: A Lifetime of Avant-Garde Design, Kagan, p. 103, illustrates related form Designer: Vladimir Kagan Manufacturer: Grosfeld House Origin: United States Date: 1950s Dimensions: 15.25" H x 78" W x 22" D
