About the Item
An Elegant and Timeless French Midcentury Modern Neoclassical Wrought Iron and Fossilized Limestone Console by the French master ironworker of "Les Annees 40", Gilbert Poillerat, Paris.. This iconic work represents the ethos of Poillerat's work and the French Forties period (1937-1949). It is a sublime work of materials, craftsmanship, design and above all, thematic content. Crafted by hand in hammered iron, Poillerat delicately allows light and space between his forms so the piece can breathe and speak. The form is delicate and rhythmic, the legs are bold and tapered, the apron has symbolic circles, squares and stars cut out and the top is elegantly floating. The piece is filled with symbol and metaphor and is meant to encourage people to hang on, to take to the divine circle and stars, as they go through the most difficult time of their lives during WWII. Overall, Poillerat's console is a masterful work of craftsmanship, concept and poetry. Dimensions: H 28 x W 28.25 x D 10.12
