About the Item

Joaquim Tenreiro / Unique Console Table Jacaranda Rosewood / Brazil, 1950s A monumental console table in jacaranda by Joaquim Tenreiro, uniting precise craftsmanship with vernacular tradition. The solid rosewood frame supports a veneered top and hand-carved bico de jaca drawers, a poetic modern reinterpretation of 19th-century farmhouse furniture. With provenance to architect David Libeskind’s São Paulo residence, the piece retains its original labels and has been fully restored. Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) is regarded as the father of modern Brazilian furniture. His work championed the idea of lightness: slender forms, graceful proportions, and the use of native woods and cane, marking a decisive break with colonial styles. Pieces like this console demonstrate his ability to merge artisanal tradition with a modernist language, creating furniture that is both culturally rooted and timelessly elegant.
