About the Item

1930's Thonet B282 desk by Bruno Weill with unique family provenance of history and including its original Thonet key This desk comes from the family Brandt Corstius who lived right across the Gerrit Rietveld Schröder house at the Prins Hendriklaan in Utrecht Photo 2 shows the compete interior of their house including the Bruno Weill Thonet desk and was taken in 1939, one of the lounge chairs from this interior has been recently purchased by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam for their permanent collection The Brandt Corstius family had a close relationship with Gerrit Rietveld and they commissioned a holiday house in Petten by this famous Dutch architect & Designer (photo 4) The chair in photo's is not included and can be purchased separately upon request Information taken from the Vitra Design Museum on the Thonet B 282 desk It is no longer possible to establish definitively who designed the B 282 desk. The 1930/31 Thonet catalogue attributes it to Béwé, an alias of the Austrian designer Bruno Weill. As director of Thonet Frères, Paris, Weill introduced the production of tubular steel furniture to the company. But in catalogues of 1932, 1933, and 1935 the B 282 desk is attributed to someone by the name of Coqueri. The desk is typical of the so-called unit furniture of the 1930s. It has a simple tubular steel frame within which the tabletop and drawers are mounted. The universal frame allows for various configurations, as the 1935 Thonet catalogue illustrates. For the B 287 desk by Béwé, similar to the B 282, the catalogue showed fourteen possible setups, which differed in the number and position of base structures and drawers. It demonstrates that the purpose of such furniture was not only to promote serial production but, additionally, to meet the needs of the individual. Béwé also designed the B 286 desk for Thonet, which reflected the Art Deco style popular in France. Condition The desk shows wear consistent with age and use and has been refurbished with respect to its authenticity, there is chrome loss in some area's on the bottom tubular frame Photo's of this symphatetic restoration and minor repairs are available upon request
