About the Item

Available today, this Brazilian Modern desk with Chair designed by Geraldo de Barros for Unilabor in the 50s is nothing less than spectacular! The desk is made with Brazilian rosewood (also known as jacaranda) and iron. The tabletop is made with Brazilian rosewood and is supported with a black iron frame. The large drawers are perfect for storage. The wood on this piece has a stunning natural grain with clean lines and beautiful coloring. It has also been refinished and is in excellent condition. What makes this desk so special is that it comes with its matching chair, also by Geraldo de Barros in metal and reupholstered white leather seat (original color). A collectors dream! The last images showcase vintage publications of these pieces including Unilabor's manufacture manual. This Brazilian modern desk and chair set would be a perfect addition to any home office and will not only look great in any mid-century collection but in any modern, contemporary or eclectic space. Geraldo de Barros was a key player in Brazil's Modernist movement during the 1950s. Having initially been a painter close to the European avant-garde and the pioneer of abstract photography in Brazil in the 1940s, de Barros moved into furniture design in the early 1950s. He founded the company Unilabor in 1954 with a Dominican priest and skilled tradesmen. Unilabor became one of the most important furniture companies in Brazil, but internal disputes led to its closure in 1967. De Barros then founded Hobjeto, another furniture design company, with Aloísio Bione in 1964. Geraldo de Barros' furniture designs were known for their modernist style, clean lines, and use of materials such as wood, metal, and glass. He also incorporated elements of Brazilian culture and traditions into his designs, such as using traditional weaving techniques in his chairs and incorporating local woods like jacaranda and peroba in his pieces. Overall, his designs were functional, elegant, and timeless. His work has been exhibited in several museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Pinacoteca do Estado in Sao Paulo. De Barros passed away in 1998, but his legacy continues to influence contemporary artists and designers.

Geraldo de Barros writing desk Unilabor Brazil 1956
By Geraldo de Barros, Unilabor
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Very nice minimalistic small writing desk designed by Geraldo de Barros and manufactured by Unilabor, Brazil 1956. The desk is made up of three main parts. The black iron frame, rosewood finished top and the drawer cabinet. The drawer fronts have the characteristic white laminated finish with metal handles. Unilabor could use these same parts to create different furniture designs, following the company's standards. This approach was part of a methodical way of making things, and the design style was common to other factories of that time. The most unique idea was how they thought about the production process in an organised way. In very good condition with beautiful grain to the rosewood. The chair on the pictures is not included. Literature;  Brazilian Modern Design Alberto Vicente Marcelo Vasconcellos 2017, page 264-281 The most profound conceptual experience in the production of modern furniture in Brazil was led by Geraldo de Barros, a major artist of the Concrete Art movement in the country. Interested in new technologies and processes, Geraldo's career was consistently permeated with artistic experiments, particularly in photography and painting. His affiliation with design was influenced by the "gute form" principle advocated by Max Bill. Bill was the founder of the Ulm School...
