Mid century modern Jatoba executive Ico Parisi office set Terni. Ico Parisi SIX pieces office set in fantastic condition. All the furniture in this one of a kind set have been designed by Ico Parisi. NB the price is for the complete set: The Jatoba executive desk, the matching Jatoba executive chair, the two Jatoba secretary/guest chairs, the Jatoba sideboard and the Jatoba and porta telex/fax. The set will be shipped insured in custom made wooden crates if the transport is organized by us. The shipping cost quoted by us is insurance and custom made wooden crates included. Unique executive office set designed by Ico Parisi in 1958 for MIM, Rome. Ico Parisi created clean, sleek and sculptural designs in wood and metal for high-end clients, he was one of a group of influential designers who epitomized the modern look of the 1950s era. The center piece of this stylish office set is one of the most beautiful executive desks ever designed and produced, the ‘Terni.’ This finely crafted ‘Partners’ or ‘double-sided’ writing desk has numerous details. The curved rectangular Jatoba top floats above a drawer case organized asymmetrically that suggests an architectural design, a storage tower. Accessible from both sides featuring three Jatoba and aluminium drawers at the front and two at the back. Demonstrating Paris’s genius of elegance and craftsmanship, the X-shaped leg structures feature intricate joinery with steel caps to the feet. The desk also has two sliding trays affixed to the underside of the desktop. The tables previous (and first) owner specified a custom sheet of glass which has preserved the Jatoba in near mint condition. Obviously we have nourished and oiled the Jatoba wood so it looks as good as it does, as you can tell from our photographs. Typically the ‘Terni’ desk was produced with a rectangular top. What makes this example unusual and rare is the curved profile cut into the front edge; period documentation of Parisi designs provided by Roberta Lietti from the Parisi archives states this was only possible as a special order. The circular aluminium plaque at the corner of the desktops front edge bares the producers name: MIM, Roma which stands for Mobili Italiani Moderni, Rome. The office set includes the original MIM swivel chair, with its curvaceous Jatoba shell and brushed aluminium frame it complements the table perfectly, and two MIM visitor/secretary chairs with organically inspired, svelte rosewood legs. One Jatoba sideboard with it’s original glass top, a so-called “port” tele, a small cabinet used to support the telex machine. All also in fantastic condition (see pictures). The ‘Terni’ desk was published in the 1958, MIM production catalogue as well as in the Ico Parisi exhibition catalogue.

Domenico “Ico” Parisi was one half of a prolific postwar design duo he comprised with his wife, Luisa. Their furniture designs are known for running the stylistic gamut, with celebrated mid-century modern pieces ranging from elegantly skeletal — like dramatic ebonized dining chairs — to plush and shapely, like the iconic 1951 Egg chair, in a plethora of materials.

The son of an art teacher father, Ico Parisi was exposed to art at an early age. Born in 1916 in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, he and his family moved to Como in 1925. There, the young Parisi would begin to develop his interest in architecture and design. After earning a degree as a building inspector in 1936 and working as a civil engineer, Parisi took on an apprenticeship in the studio of Giuseppe Terragni, the modernist, fascist Italian architect, pioneer of the Rationalist movement and creator of the iconic Casa del Fascio.

While working for Terragni, Parisi crossed paths with such contemporary design talents as Lucio Fontana, Bruno Munari and Pietro Lingeri, though he briefly moved away from design and architecture to explore photography and film. His artistic work would soon be interrupted, however, by the outbreak of World War II, during which he served at the front before returning to Como in 1943. There, he resumed work as a designer and architect, founding two architecture groups: the Alta Quota and the Gruppo Como.

Through his creative circles, Parisi met Luisa Aiani, a former student of the prolific architect and furniture designer Gio Ponti, who was affiliated with the Alta Quota. They married in 1947 and founded the studio La Ruota — a cross between a design firm and an intellectual salon — in Como shortly thereafter. In 1950, Parisi finally completed his architectural schooling, studying under the nationalist architect Alberto Sartoris at the Athenaeum Architecture School in Lausanne, Switzerland. He and Aiani began several decades of sophisticated output, designing curved sofas upholstered in yellow velvet and armchairs with slender mahogany frames for enduring Italian manufacturers such as Cassina and others.

Much like Charles and Ray Eames in America, the Parisis worked as a team and relied on experimentation in style and material for many of their designs. Ico Parisi died in Como in 1996.
