About the Item

The object exudes an aura. It’s not about the shape or about the material; its auratic quality comes out of its depth, giving a strong presence with an almost ritualist intensity. Not many design pieces offer that unusual quality. Here we also see the principle of the Japanese wabisabi, which refers to embracing imperfections and underlining impermanence. Rustic aspects, simplicity, modesty, and austerity offer a humble and honest beauty. The relationship between the elements ensures a balanced composition. The careful alignment and proportions create an equilibrium, giving a sense of coherent design. All massive parts are authentic. They are done in Indian teak. Rich in texture, the wood is vivid and comes in chocolate colour. The surface is treated with shellac and there are several layers of original shellac. It provides smooth irregular gloss different from that of the sterile lacquerware nowadays. Charming irregularities show that each piece is unique. This desk is among the rarest Chandigarh pieces - an exceptional design created for the Central State Library in 1961. Only a handful exist today. With its bold structure and deeply expressive form, this table captures the radical spirit of Chandigarh. The table is constructed from solid and pleated teak, and every surface speaks of the clarity and purpose behind its design. This is the dismountable version, built with a thick tabletop that connects to a lateral storage unit. On one side, it rests on three vertical slat legs, while on the other, round solid legs support the weight with quiet strength. The storage cabinet integrates drawers and doors with aluminum bottoms. The interplay of mass and negative space, along with the different materials and proportions, gives the table a sculptural presence—something that feels both architectural and grounded. This desk is not just rare—it’s a powerful statement. It holds a unique place in the Chandigarh legacy and speaks to a moment when design was approached with absolute clarity and conviction. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand. Artefacts from our carefully curated collection are handpicked, and all traces and important indicators of authenticity are evaluated professionally. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Each object comes with a certificate of authenticity, offering you the opportunity to own a valuable artefact originating from a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur.
