Art Deco Dynamique Creations Johnson Furniture Co. Skyscraper Game / Card Table

Art Deco Dynamique Creations Johnson Furniture Co. Skyscraper Game / Card / Chess Table David Robertson Smith Important and rare early American Art Deco Machine Age Dynamique Creations piece for Johnson Handley Johnson. Groundbreaking design by David Robertson Smith for Dynamique / Johnson Furniture Co., circa 1929. Masterpiece of early Modernist American furniture design, with slight French "influence" in Rosewood , Hungarian Ash & Mahogany. Rare original blue Dynamique label, plus model number #2606 tag listing the three rare woods employed. Backsides of legs are completely finished in Rosewood with a stunning Macassar-like vertical-grained contrasting glow. Cabinet-ed front of legs in quilted Hungarian Ash with Mahogany shelves for setting drinks, smokes, etc. Conceptually brilliant. Black lacquered edges. Leather top. Fabulous X base-stretcher. Corner pull-out wing ashtray holders with removable aluminum ashtrays. Two opposed sliding drawers for cards, poker chips, etc. Original Frankl Skyscraper / Deskey Widdicomb trapezoidal cast-metal pulls, used by Robertson as well. Perfect dimensional symmetry. 28 X 28 X 28. Very good likely restored condition. Blows away nearly any early Frankl / Deskey / Rohde / Weber wood-designs in terms of construction quality and finish. See Machine Icon dealer listings for additional pieces from this line. The Dynamique line for Johnson Brothers was an important leap in modernist American furniture. Supreme designs and construction, well beyond the earliest contemporary American designs from Paul Frankl, KEM Weber, Gilbert Rohde & Donald Deskey. David Robertson Smith, former head designer of Stickley Brothers arts and crafts lines, led Johnson into the production of Art Deco and modern lines in 1928. The company later claimed that this was the first complete line of “modern” furniture produced in the United States. The 1928 introduction of the Art Deco “Dynamique” line by D. Robertson Smith, with its exotic wood veneers and forms reminiscent of Frankl’s “skyscraper” bookcases, began a long period in which the company concurrently produced both modern and revival lines.
