- It has been used for decades and accumulated different materials and colours giving it a unique patina.
Heavy duty and versatile modelling stand. Tubular aluminium legs, which can be folded for storage and transport. The feet are constructed from steel rollers mounted in gun metal castings and can be locked. Fitted with a 35.5cm (14”) top made of 25mm (1”) exterior grade plywood. This is mounted on a pair of quadrant castings, which enables the stand to be tilted and locked for low relief work. The top also locks in a vertical position for storage and transport. The height is adjusted with the heavy duty screw thread and lock nut.

Alec Tiranti Ltd has been a leading supplier of sculptors equipment since the 19th century. Giovanni (John) Tiranti founded the Company in 1895, as John Tiranti & Co., in High Holborn, and within a year moved to Foley Street, London W1. He later moved to 13 Maple Street, W1, where the Company became John Tiranti Ltd. The Company remained there until 1941, when the building was destroyed by a direct hit with a bomb. Giovanni Tiranti died in 1926, and his two sons Alec and Dom carried on. Throughout all this time the Company sold sculptor's tools, materials and equipment as well as new and antiquarian books...

Exhibiting fine detail throughout, the exquisitely handcrafted work table features a hinged shaped top with rounded corners, curved concave front, stunning highly figured matched rosewood inlay complimented by mahogany cross banded edge, set over a conforming shaped case. Lifting the top opens to reveal a fitted interior divided into eight compartments, including a hinged lid with built-in flip-up pin cushion, various size shaped lids are finished in mahogany accented by contrasting satinwood string banded border, a faux drawer front with contrasting mother-of-pearl escutcheon rests above a single frieze drawer with hand carved dovetail joinery and original turned wooden pull. Work tables, just like most tables, have evolved considerably over the years.
More than 1,000 years before iconic American furniture brand Herman Miller would help shape the way we work — and later, how we live at home — monks who lived and worked in medieval-era monasteries stood at what you might call crude writing desks, translating religious texts and copying them by hand.
While those who practiced the art of handwritten letters definitely needed a suitable writing desk, the world wouldn’t see proper roll-top desks and the like until the 19th century. Owing to the work of architects such as Antoni Gaudí, these monastery “desks” were essentially work tables. (Chairs, much less actual desk chairs, weren’t a part of the workspace until the Renaissance.) It was a far cry from the cozy home office that affords many of us the opportunity to work remotely today.
Near the end of the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution brought with it the founding of mills and factories, and hand production methods gave way to machinery and mass production. Factory workers needed sturdy industrial tables to perform tasks that required precision and to support the manufacturing industry. Spare work tables — durable and easy to clean — were constructed of metal and wood and became essential on assembly lines and in packing facilities. Today, industrial-style furniture celebrates the past even as it suggests vigor, productivity and brawn.
