Charles Hollis Jones O Line Side Table, 1970s
Located in Culver City, CA
This table is gorgeous, the "O Line" table is one of Charles Hollis Jones' most iconic designs. It is a side table made entirely out of acrylic, featuring a circular top and a cylindrical base. The table's name is derived from the shape of its base, which resembles the letter "O." The O Line table was first introduced in the late 1960s and quickly became a symbol of Jones' innovative approach to furniture design. The use of acrylic in the construction of the table gives it a unique sense of lightness and transparency, while also highlighting the material's strength and durability. The O Line table has been produced in a variety of sizes and finishes over the years, and remains a sought-after piece among collectors of mid-century modern furniture. Its timeless design and versatile aesthetic make it a timeless classic. Charles Hollis Jones is an American artist and designer who is best known for his innovative work in acrylic furniture design. Born in 1945 in Indiana, Jones began his career in the 1960s, creating custom furnishings for clients in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Jones' signature style involves using acrylic, to create sleek and modern furniture pieces. His work is characterized by clean lines, simple shapes, and a sense of lightness and transparency that belies the material's durability and strength. Jones' work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and his designs have been used in a wide range of commercial and residential settings. His clients have included celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Elvis Presley, as well as major corporations like the Four Seasons Hotel and the MGM Grand. Original Production John Dickinson Galvanized Steel Drape End Table, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This exceptionally rare and high-sought after collectors item is the John Dickinson model #107 drape end table with trompe-l'œil fabric motif in galvanized steel and brass binding. This piece of functional fine art is suited for a design collector, art investor or an interior designer looking to impress a hard-to-please client who wants nothing but the best of the best. This iconic 1970s American design by John Dickinson was later produced by Sutherland, and even the Sutherland examples have great worth and collectibility. But nothing compares to the originals, like this one. An interior steel frame with adjustable feet gives this table ample sturdiness and is suited for regular every-day use - but can also be used as an impressive stand-alone sculpture. Original John Dickinson pieces are exceptionally hard to find. This example of the galvanized steel trompe l'oeil draped tablecloth table...

Vintage, New and Antique Side Tables

While the range of styles and variety of materials have broadened over time, the priceless functionality of side tables has held true.

Vintage, new and antique side tables are an integral accent to our seating and provide additional, necessary storage in our homes. They can be a great foundation for that perfect focal piece of art that you want all your guests to see as you congregate for cocktails in the living room. Side tables are indeed ideal as a stage for your decorative objects or plants in your library or your study, and they are a practical space for the novel or stack of design magazines you keep close to your sofa.

Sure, owning a pair of side tables isn’t as imperative as having a coffee table in the common area, though most of us would struggle without them. Those made of metal, stone or wood are frequently featured in stylish interiors, and if you’re shopping for side tables, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

With respect to the height of your side tables, a table that is as high as your lounge chair or the arm of your couch is best. Some folks are understandably fussy about coherence in a living room area, but coherence doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t mix and match. Feel free to introduce minimalist mid-century modern wooden side tables designed by Paul McCobb alongside your contemporary metal coffee table. If you think it isn’t possible to pair a Hollywood Regency–style side table with a contemporary sofa, we’re here to tell you that it is. Even a leggy side table can balance a chunky sofa well. Try to keep a limited color palette in mind if you’re planning on mixing furniture styles and materials, and don’t be afraid to add a piece of abstract art to shake things up.

As far as the objects you’re planning to place on your side tables, if you have heavy items such as stone or sculptures to display, a fragile glass-top table would not be an ideal choice. Think about what material would best support your collectibles and go with that. If it’s a particularly small side table, along with a tall, sleek floor lamp, it can make for a great way to fill a corner of the room you wouldn’t otherwise easily be able to populate.

Whether you are looking for an antique 19th-century carved oak side table or a vintage rattan side table (because rattan never went away!), the collection on 1stDibs has you covered.
