Period George III Mahogany Two-Tiered Dumb Waiter

About the Item

This piece made in England, circa 1770 is of an unusual size and with the added feature of folding drop leaves. Made from solid mahogany without veneers the piece is heavy and mannish with a deep rich color to the wood. The table is accented with fine detailed carved line bands along the edge of the drop leaves and well shaped turned balusters for uprights and nice simple feet on pads. While described by Sheraton in his essay of 1803 as" a useful piece of furniture to serve in some respects the place of a waiter, whence it is named" the type of furniture was used from the 1720s on as a place to put plates, desserts, wine etc to permit parties to continue on after servants were dismissed. They became excellent pieces for the display of porcelains or special objects of interest in later eras. This small compact one would make an excellent end table as it is low and has the unusual feature of a larger top tier when opened. This table’s true age is apparent when examined from the underside but now has a deep rich red new finish and polish.
