Chikanobu Triptych – Shogun Returns from the Hunt in Koganehara, c.1897 This powerful and dynamic triptych by Toyohara Chikanobu (1838–1912) depicts the Shogun and his retinue returning from a falconry hunt across the vast grasslands of Koganehara. The print is part of the celebrated Meiji-era series Chiyoda no Omote (Outer Palace of Chiyoda), which portrayed ceremonial and military scenes from the life of the Tokugawa shogunate. This series blends historical reverence with a modern Meiji sensibility, celebrating Japan’s warrior heritage at a time of rapid transformation. Rendered in rich color and vivid linework, the triptych shows a noble procession in motion: the mounted Shogun at center turns back toward the viewer, while falconers and warriors in elaborate dress surround him. Attendants carry game and falconry equipment, and a dense forest line marks the horizon behind them. The sweeping composition emphasizes both movement and status, with the central figure visually dominant and placed against a pale, open sky. The triptych is signed by Chikanobu with the toshidama cartouche and published by Fukuda Hatsujirō around 1897. Chikanobu, one of the last great ukiyo-e masters, was celebrated for his ability to capture imperial ceremony, samurai culture, and the feminine elegance of the court — often in triptych format for dramatic impact. While the work shows some age-related signs, it retains strong visual appeal and is a compelling historical document of samurai-era tradition as imagined through Meiji eyes. Condition report: Good overall condition considering age. The three sheets are mounted together on old Japanese paper backing (verso), which is loosening slightly along the joins. Light overall toning and minor wrinkling across the panels. Colors remain well preserved with strong impression and no major losses or tears. Margins present, minor handling wear visible. A stable and attractive display piece. Framing tips: We recommend float mounting the full triptych in a custom horizontal frame, allowing the slight backing and joins to remain visible as part of its historical charm. Use a dark walnut or black lacquer frame with an off-white or light beige acid-free mat. Proper archival mounting can help preserve the integrity of the backing while enhancing its display quality. Technique: Woodblock print (ōban triptych) Maker: Toyohara Chikanobu, Japan, c.1897 Publisher: Fukuda Hatsujirō Keywords: Chikanobu triptych, samurai falconry print, Japanese woodblock print, Meiji print, Chiyoda no Omote, shogun artwork, Koganehara, antique Japanese triptych...

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: French Heavy Cavalry 1795, Napoleonic Military Uniform Print This finely hand-colored 19th-century engraving depicts a mounted soldier of the French heavy cavalry (Grosse Cavalerie) as it appeared in 1795, during the formative years of the French Revolutionary Wars that directly preceded Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power. Shown astride a powerful horse, the cavalryman wears the characteristic uniform of the period, combining practicality, elegance, and martial presence. The image reflects the transition from Revolutionary armies to the professionalized forces that would soon become the Grande Armée. Heavy cavalry played a decisive role in French military doctrine, valued for shock tactics, battlefield dominance, and symbolic authority. The careful rendering of uniform details, horse equipment, and posture emphasizes discipline and prestige, qualities later strongly associated with Napoleonic warfare. This print originates from Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, and is based on designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the leading military artist of 19th-century France and the most influential visual chronicler of Napoleon and his army. His works are celebrated for their accuracy, clarity, and lasting impact on the visual memory of Napoleonic history. Produced during the great Napoleonic revival of the mid-19th century, the print reflects both historical documentation and romantic admiration for the era. It is particularly appealing to collectors of Napoleonic material, French military history, and antique uniform...

Located in Langweer, NL

Cuba – Enlightenment Island Map by Rigobert Bonne, c.1780 This finely engraved late-18th-century map depicts the island of Cuba, titled L’Isle de Cuba, engraved circa 1780 by Rigobert Bonne, one of the most influential figures of Enlightenment-era French cartography. The map presents a comprehensive and scientifically structured view of Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean and a cornerstone of Spanish colonial power in the Americas during the 18th century. Bonne served as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. His work marked a decisive shift away from decorative excess toward clarity, standardized measurement, and the systematic use of contemporary geographic and hydrographic intelligence. This map belongs to Bonne’s mature period and exemplifies his restrained engraving style, valued for both accuracy and visual balance. The geography is rendered with notable precision. Cuba’s elongated form is clearly articulated from Cape San Antonio in the west to Cape Maisí in the east. Mountain ranges, river systems, plains, and coastal lowlands are carefully delineated, while major cities and ports such as Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad, and Puerto Príncipe are prominently shown. Surrounding waters—including the Florida Strait, the Old Bahama Channel, and the Bahamas archipelago—underscore Cuba’s strategic maritime position within the Caribbean and Atlantic trade networks. Visually calm yet authoritative, the map’s wide horizontal format, fine line engraving, and generous margins give it strong architectural presence when framed. It functions equally well as a scholarly historical document and as a refined decorative wall piece for a library, study, or contemporary interior. Collectors value Bonne’s Caribbean maps for their clarity, scientific credibility, and understated Enlightenment aesthetic. Condition report Good antique condition. Light age toning and minor handling wear consistent with 18th-century copperplate engraving. Original centerfold as issued. Clean impression with strong legibility; margins ample for framing. Framing tips Best framed in dark walnut or ebonized wood with a generous ivory or warm off-white mat. Museum glass recommended to preserve detail and enhance contrast. Particularly effective as a wide-format focal piece. SEO keywords Cuba antique...

Cultural Encounter in New Mexico, Copper Engraving Published in 1673

Located in Langweer, NL

This original copper engraving hails from Arnoldus Montanus' seminal work, "Die Unbekannte Neue Welt oder Beschreibung des Welt-teils Amerika und des Sud-Landes," a comprehensive depiction of the Americas published in 1673. It presents a vivid scene set in colonial New Mexico, showcasing a moment of interaction—possibly a ceremonial or everyday event—between indigenous people and European settlers or explorers. The detailed attire and adornments of the figures suggest a narrative rich in cultural exchange and complexity. This piece is not only a reflection of the artistic style and engraving techniques of the 17th century but also serves as a historical document capturing the early encounters between different worlds. Published in Amsterdam by Jacob Meurs, this rare German edition offers a unique glimpse into the perceptions and imaginations of European society regarding the New World during the Age of...

1726 Map of Bengal by Van der Aa after Valentijn – Dutch East Indies

Located in Langweer, NL

1726 Map of Bengal by Van der Aa after Valentijn – Dutch East Indies This is an original antique map titled “Nieuwe Kaart van ’t Koninryk van Bengale,” published by Pieter van der Aa in Leiden in 1726. The map depicts the Kingdom of Bengal and surrounding regions, based on earlier work by François Valentijn, a Dutch East India Company (VOC) official and historian whose extensive writings on Asia were among the most important early European sources. The engraving covers the Bengal region (modern-day Bangladesh and West Bengal, India), showing detailed river systems including the Ganges and its distributaries flowing into the Gulf of Bengal. Major towns, cities, and kingdoms are labelled in Dutch, such as Orixa (Orissa), Arracan, Tipera (Tripura), and Cos Assam (Assam). Mountain ranges are represented pictorially with stylised hachured peaks, while fertile plains are indicated with field patterns, adding visual texture to the map. In the upper right is an elegant title cartouche with dedication to VOC officials, referencing Mathijs van den Broecke, a director in Bengal, and Johannes Lennep. A compass rose is positioned at the bottom, enhancing its decorative maritime appeal, with north oriented to the right as typical for Dutch maps of Asian regions in this period. Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733) was a prolific publisher known for compiling maps from earlier explorers and engravers into elegant and collectible volumes. His works remain valued for their historical significance, decorative artistry, and connection to VOC trade networks and colonial history. Condition: Good condition. Strong impression with later hand colouring. Light age toning, faint foxing mainly in margins, and some creasing along original fold lines as issued. Fully suitable for framing. Framing tips: Frame this map in a slim gilt or dark wood frame to highlight its decorative hand colouring. Use an off-white archival mat to accentuate the engraving and protect the edges. UV-protective glazing is recommended to maintain colour vibrancy and paper integrity. Keywords block for your listing: bengal map...

Chile from Peru to Cape Horn – Enlightenment Map by Rigobert Bonne, c.1780 This finely engraved late-18th-century map depicts Chile from southern Peru to Cape Horn, titled Carte du Chili, depuis le Sud du Pérou jusqu’au Cap Horn, avec partie des régions qui en sont à l’Est, engraved circa 1780 by Rigobert Bonne, one of the most important figures of Enlightenment-era French cartography. The map presents a sweeping vertical view of the Pacific coast of South America, extending from Peru through Chile and Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn, while also showing large portions of the Argentine interior east of the Andes. Bonne served as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. His work marked a decisive shift toward scientific, measurement-based cartography, emphasizing clarity, standardized projection, and the synthesis of contemporary geographic intelligence. This map exemplifies his mature style, combining dense geographical information with exceptional legibility and restraint. The geography is rendered with notable precision. The Andes Mountains form a dominant north–south spine, clearly separating Chile from the provinces east of the cordillera, including Tucumán, Buenos Aires, and the Pampas. Coastal features along the Pacific are crisply engraved, while inland rivers, Indigenous regions, and colonial settlements reflect late-18th-century European understanding of southern South America. The southern reaches depict Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, the Strait of Magellan, and Cape Horn, highlighting the strategic and navigational importance of this region. Visually commanding yet restrained, the map’s tall vertical format, fine line engraving, and balanced density give it strong architectural presence when framed. Museum glass recommended to preserve detail and enhance contrast. Particularly effective as a tall vertical statement piece. SEO keywords: Chile antique...
