About the Item

Claes Thell (Swedish, 1943-2019) was one of Sweden’s leading ceramic artists of the 20th /21st Century. He worked as a ceramicist at the Hoganas factory before starting his own studio where he gained recognition as an artist who experimented with both shapes and glazes leading to unique stoneware pieces. Examples of his work are in the National Museum in Stockholm. An unusual modernist Swedish ceramic wall plaque with a quadratic form of abstract figures in relief by Claes Thell (Swedish, 1943-2009) and dated 1980. This limited-edition square form stoneware plaque is sculpted in relief with abstract figures in a mirror like surround and hand decorated in brown and yellow glazes. The plaque was made in a limited edition of 250 pieces at his Hoganas studio of which this is number 87. The plaque has a hanging slit applied to the back and is marked 87/250 and bears an incised title and the date 1980. The plaque is also signed C Thell to the front lower right edge. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.

Åke Holm Swedish Höganäs Man with Flagon Ceramic Wall Plaque
By Ake Holm
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
Åke Holm (Swedish, 1900-80) was one of Sweden’s leading ceramic artists in the 20th century. He worked at the Höganäs factory in his early years before opening his own studio in the area. Åke became a master of and glazing and often used biblical themes in his work, but always with a distinct modernist styling. He produced figurines and wall plaques with rustic and mythological expression and his work is getting the recognition it deserves for its unique quality and style. His monumetal stoneware sculptures of figures from the Bible as well as his wall plaques are now recognisd as some of the finest ceramics produced in Sweden in the second half of the Twentieth Century. His work is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art & Design. One of three we are offering is this superb Swedish Höganäs glazed ceramic wall plaque depicting a man with a flagon by Åke Holm (Swedish, 1900-80) and probably made in the 1960’s. The heavy stoneware plaque is of rectangular landscape shape and depicts a man’s head with moustache and hairdo with similar styled partings next to a large flagon of similar size to the head. The head and flagon are hand carved in high relief forming a slight indentation to the surface of the plaque. The image is decorated in dark blue and brown (tones) with a chestnut glaze applied to the back. The plaque has a hanging indent...
