About the Item

Okiie Hashimoto "Garden, Ginkakuji" Abstract Woodcut This is a striking framed abstract woodcut print by renowned Japanese printmaker Okiie Hashimoto (1899-1993). Hashimoto was best known as part of the postwar revival of the sosaku-hanga (Creative Prints) movement. In his prolific career in printmaking, he was known for an innovative use of simplified and decorative forms that exude a modern feel. He was interested in expressing the effects of light, as well as carefully controlled geometry in composition and forms. This piece is a fine example of his work, depicting a traditional Japanese garden, accented by colorful abstract blooms. The work features wonderful composition and negative space. "Garden, Ginkakuji" is numbered lower left as Edition 10/60. It is titled in Japanese, pencil-signed and dated (1959) lower right, and framed in its original burnished gold wooden frame. Hashimoto was born in 1899 Tottori Prefecture. He graduated from the College of Art in Tokyo and began his career as an art educator. He began creating woodblock prints after attending a workshop organized by prominent sosaku-hanga artist Un'ichi Hiratsuka. Unlike Hiratsuka, who focused on black and white compositions, Hashimoto embraced vibrant, bold, and pure colors in his work. But like Hiratsuka, Hashimoto deeply valued the essence of old Japan. His woodcuts often feature historical buildings in the traditional Japanese architectural style, including castles, gardens, temples, and homes, reflecting the cultural heritage and values of traditional Japan. Nature's beauty and the serene landscapes of Japan, particularly in its few remaining untouched regions, also inspired Hashimoto. While little is known about Hashimoto's paintings, his woodcuts gained him international acclaim. His works can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Harvard Art Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Fine Art, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, and the British Museum, among others.
