About the Item
Signed American oil on canvas jointly painted by listed artist Donald Rust (b.1932) and Emmett Kelly. The painting depicts a middle aged, portly couple, eating desert in the window of a restaurant, with Emmett Kelly, the highly acclaimed American clown, dressed as his most famous character "Weary Willie," a sad, hobo clown, looking through the window. Signed and dated in the lower right by both the artist - Rust 1987, but also by Emmett Kelly 1988. Set in a hardwood frame.
Born in 1898, Emmett found fame in the circus and later extended his reach to film, television, and the stage. Kelly's unique brand of clowning, which involved interacting with other acts and using a character that was both sad and endearing, made him a beloved figure. He passed away in 1979 in Sarasota, Florida.
Donald Rust of Erie Pennsylvania, is known for wildlife, seascapes, still-life, portraits, glamour, illustrations, pin-ups, camouflage-type, fantasy, and nudes. Rust's paintings are at the Ringling Museum of the Circus, Sarasota, Florida; the Norman Rockwell Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
