19th Century French Priest Oil Painting in Carved Giltwood Frame Signed M. Valle

About the Item

This antique portrait painting titled "L'Eveque a la Lecture" (the bishop reading), was created in France, circa 1890. The rectangular artwork is set inside a carved giltwood frame and depicts an interior scene with a French cardinal reading a funny book and a priest standing behind him. Both clergymen are dressed in traditional cassocks. Their expression are jovial and all smiles. Details throughout the clothing and facial expression is beautifully and realistically executed. The canvas is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, M. Valle. The painting is in excellent condition with rich colors throughout and wonderful carvings in the ornate, high-relief frame. Measures: 16" W x 21.5" H.
