About the Item

Nineteenth century View from the spiers of the Milan Cathedral Watercolor on paper, 43 x 30 cm The watercolor in question depicts some ladies and gentlemen intent on enjoying the view from the terraces of the Milan Cathedral. The composition is carefully studied and the characters are linked together by correspondence of gestures and glances; the first girl is lying comfortably on the ground next to a young man and observes rapturous a flock of birds that comes quickly towards them. In front of them an older lady is bent to the ground, while a little further back an elegantly dressed girl takes shelter in the shade of a colorful umbrella, extending a hand full of birdseed towards the hungry pigeons. Some of them have already gathered in the foreground and peck at the feed undisturbed, completely regardless of the human presence. Characteristic objects enrich the scene such as the jacket and umbrella lying on the ground or the red cloth resting on the balustrade of the terrace on which binoculars are placed, used to fully appreciate the wide panorama; the observer can guess its presence thanks to the city glimpse that opens behind the imposing buttress. The view faithfully captures a cross-section of nineteenth-century daily life, meticulously rendering the details, the architectural elements and the statues that still today decorate the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, the symbol par excellence of the Lombard capital. The calm and carefree atmosphere that characterizes the work is further transmitted by the palette of soft colors spread over overlapping glazes, which, in addition to giving strength and tonality to the color itself, give depth to the preparatory drawing, usually done in light pencil. pictorial useful for the representation of volumes, shadows and light.
