Outsider Art "Animals and Castles" Oil on Panel by Bruno Del Favero
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil on panel by acclaimed outsider artist, Bruno Del Favero (b. Italy 1910, d. USA 1995), circa 1970. Fine example showcasing Del Favero's aptitude for creating fantastical landscapes. Contrasting oxen / bulls and flamingos with a castle backdrop creates an imaginary context removed from reality. Del Favero's marriage of fantasy and whimsy beautifully suits his Naïve painting style. Singed on verso. Bio from the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Born Princeton, Michigan, 1910; died Greenwich, Connecticut, 1995 Bruno Del Favero moved from Michigan to northern Italy with his parents at age five, returning in 1928 and settling in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he married and remained for the rest of his days. He made his living as a mason, chauffeur, and landscape gardener. It is not known exactly when or why he began to paint his delicate and mysterious landscapes, but he was exhibiting in local art shows by the early 1970s and took himself seriously enough as an artist to join the Greenwich Art Society. He maintained a studio in the basement of his home, but never shared his art with his wife and five children. After the artist's death his family introduced his work to New York dealers Shari Cavin...

Modern Still-Life Pinecone Oil Painting Panel Buffie Johnson 1974 Plant Series
By Buffie Johnson
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil on linen. "Pit Thea", Study of a pine cone. From the Plant Series 1968-1989. Signed lower left, dated 1974. Signed and titled and dated on back. 20" X 24" (floating frame 21" X 25"). My imagery is rooted in the world of the spirit which manifests itself through ritual, myth and symbol. The monolithic single-image plant forms which I began painting in 1968 are potent symbols of the ancient Great Goddess in Her aspect as ‘Lady of the Plants’, who . . . has been worshipped under a thousand names since the beginnings of prehistory.” (Buffie Johnson, Artist’s Statement for the exhibition catalogue of The Language of Symbols, Landmark Gallery, New York City, April 1980.) “... in the ancient world ... such images were perceived as sacred. This sense of divinity inherent in the plant has inspired these icons and through them I hope to evoke a similar magical experience. These forms were created both as metaphors for the spiritual mystery of nature . . . [and] as celebrations of the feminine.” (Buffie Johnson, Artist’s Statement for the exhibition catalogue of Buffie Johnson: The Spirit of Plants, Chuck Levitan Gallery, New York City, October 3rd – October 26th, 1997.) Antique and Vintage Paintings for Sale on 1stDibs

When paired with the perfect frame, the right antique and vintage paintings and other wall decorations can either subtly showcase your personality or steal the show altogether.

The earliest paintings were created on the walls of caves, proving even our ancient ancestors knew that striking artwork is meant to be on display. Cave paintings on an Indonesian island are reportedly older than the earliest cave art in Spain and France, and the figurative paintings back then were produced with inorganic pigments like iron oxide.

Later, the people of Ancient Greece — who learned about art from the Egyptians before them — conceived panel paintings of wax and tempera that were collected and publicly displayed. In the centuries that followed, artists would be commissioned to create large-scale wall murals and frescoed ceilings in sprawling European palaces and in the homes of the aristocracy.

Today, 1stDibs makes it easy for you to celebrate this rich history in your own home. Our collection of paintings includes Art Deco paintings, baroque art and a broad range of other categories. Search by material, period or other attributes to find the right fit — browse an array of 19th century landscape paintings in giltwood frames or abstract oil paintings and portraits made during the 1950s and ‘60s.

An understated contemporary work can complement your space’s color palette without drawing the focus away from the other pivotal design choices you’ve made over the years. Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop art, on the other hand, demands attention with its array of vibrant hues and subjects inspired by popular culture.

Whether you aim to create a gallery in your home or build a single, stunning focal point, you can find what you’re looking for in an extensive inventory of paintings on 1stDibs.
