Abstract impressionist oil painting on masonite of two figures w/ symbols by Zoute ( self portrait of Zoute and his wife Thelma ) signed dated lower right bottom - Zoute '49 ( born Leon Salter - 1903-1976, North Rose, NY ) Zoute was a self taught artist painter. He was well exhibited during his lifetime. He painted from 1940-1954 - upon the passing of his beloved wife Thelma in 1954 - he never again painted. He was an integral part of the great modern wave. He was represented during the 1940's - early 1950's by a number of NYC galleries w/ one man shows - Grand Central Galleries / Joseph Heller Gallery / Mortimer Levitt Gallery. He exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art NYC / Whitney Museum NYC as well as many other prominent art museums exhibitions group shows. He was asked to exhibit his work at the invitation only State University of Iowa International Show ( 1946-1947 ) along with a very select group of the most important artists of the day such as Braque, Klee, Picasso.
