About the Item
American abstract impressionist oil painting on maisonite by Zoute' ( born Leon Salter, 1903 - 1976 / North Rose, NY ) a portrait of his beloved wife Thelma sitting on a tall back chair w/ one hand raised holding a cluster of grapes / the other hand holding a single grape. Signed lower right corner - Zoute '46. Zoute' was a self taught artist and an integral part of the great modern wave. He was well exhibited during his lifetime. He was represented by a number of galleries w/ one man shows - Grand Central Galleries NYC / Mortimer Levitt Gallery NYC - during the 1940's / Joseph Heller Gallery - during the 1950's. His paintings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art NYC / Whitney Museum NYC and numerous shows, galleries, museums across the United States. He was chosen to exhibit at the invitation only State University of Iowa International Show ( 1946-1947 ) along with a very select group of the most important artists of the day such as Picasso, Braque, Klee. He was critically acclaimed as the best colorist of the day by the New York Times. Zoute' painted from 1940 till 1954 / in 1954 the year of his wife Thelmas' passing - he never painted again.
