About the Item

An intriguing and well-painted watercolor, gouache and graphite on paper depicting a cavalier with a dagger, lying in wait, signed and dated lower left "F. Smallfield 1862", titled lower right "Waiting". This evocative picture was probably painted as a book illustration. Smallfield (English 1829-1915) was a very well-known painter in his time who trained at the Royal Academy Schools in the late 1840's and was named as an Associate of the Watercolor Society (AWCS) in 1860. His works show a Pre-Raphaelite influence and were admired by John Ruskin. He continued to exhibit works at the Royal Academy until the late 1870's. Smallfield's work is found in various regional museums including the Manchester City Galleries, The Royal Institution of Cornwall and the Atkinson gallery in Southport. His drawings are in the famous Victoria and Albert museum. The piece is nicely framed in a burl walnut moulding with a French matt. Framed dimensions: H 21.5" W. 18".
