About the Item

Imagination Arienne 1939, 42" x 124", oil/canvas, signed and dated. Important Art Deco mural from the Louis Schwitzer residence (Indianapolis). Bourdelle did the murals in the Union Terminal in Cincinnati (1933). This was done the same year he did the important commission at the Worlds Fair NY. This mural was originally mounted to a curved wall in the bar (see below) It was professionally removed and is in excellent, pliable condition. It could be remounted to a wall or put on stretchers. While this is an easy project, it is more practical to do this after it is shipped to the general location where it will remain. Pierre Van Parys Bourdelle was born in Paris, France, on April 21, 1901, the son of the famous French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929). He fought in WWI, suffering severe physical trauma which resulted in him becoming deaf. He was embittered by the experiences which he suffered, and it shows in his art.Bourdelle studied under Rodin (who studied with the senior Bourdelle), graduated from Lyce Henr 1918 and the Sorbonne in 1921. In 1929 he moved to the United States. He was an artist operating out of New York in the 30's-40's. Bourdelle tried to make a living with corporate contracts, and he produced large scale paintings, murals and reliefs for many architectural projects in New York and other cities, as well as for a number of ships, including the huge murals in the dining room of the SS America. He executed an important commission at Cincinnati's Union Terminal in 1933, and in 1939, he executed a spectacular mural/relief for the Food Building at the World's Fair in New York, as seen in the extended catalog images. In 1936, he contributed a mural to the historic renovation of the Centennial Building at Fair Park (Dallas, TX), titled, "Speed", also as seen in the catalog images. Working through several different architectural design houses, he also created a number of artworks for the rail industryÂ including the California Zephyr. His CZ works were carved linoleum sculptures that adorned the bar fronts in the dome-buffet and lounge-observation cars, a wall map of the CZ's route in the buffet's coffee shop, and the Steward's podium in the diner. Pierre Bourdelle died in Geneva, Switzerland on July 5, 1966. ________________________________________________________ Louis H. Schwitzer From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Louis H Schwitzer (February 29, 1880 - May 9, 1967 (aged 87)) was born in Bielitz, Austria-Hungary, and emigrated to America before World War I. As an engineer, he was influential in designing hydraulics for use in bus transportation[citation needed]. He pioneered improvements in automotive cooling fans, water pumps and oil pumps, and the turbocharger.[1] As an automobile race driver, Schwitzer won the first automobile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), a five mile race on August 19, 1909.[citation needed] He is known to have started five races at IMS in 1909 and 1910.[2][3] He also drove relief, for Harry Cobe, in the first Indianapois 500.[4][5] Schwitzer served on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Technical Committee from 1912 through 1945.[1] In recognition of his contributions to the early developmental history of American motorsports, the Louis H. Schwitzer Award for Design Innovation, presented annually after each running of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, is named after him. In 1970, Schwitzer was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.[6] Schwitzer donated many buildings to schools and colleges in Indiana.[citation needed] The Student Center at the University of Indianapolis bears his name. He had one son, Louis H Schwitzer Jr.(d 1973) One Grandson, Louis H Schwitzer III (1945- ) Three Great-Grandchildren, Louis H Schwitzer IV (1970- ), Carl Schwitzer (1973- ), Heidi Schwitzer (1975- ) He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
