About the Item
French painter and illustrator Lucien Laurent-Gsell was born on November 19, 1860 in Paris and died in 1944.
His father Gaspard is renowned for his stained-glass windows (Eglise de l'Isle-Adam) and the quality of his restorations. The name of Laurent is attached to Gsell; the name of his mother, daughter of Emile Laurent, famous glassmaker.
Lucien Laurent-Gsell entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he was a pupil of Gaspard Gsell (his father) and Alexandre Cabanel. Both teachings gave him a passion for the rendering of light in colors, combined with remarkable technical virtuosity in the mastery of drawing.
He painted numerous Orientalist scenes as well as scenes of genre where the female characters were overflowing with vitality and sensuality. His works are included in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay.
