About the Item
An early Slavic folk school oil by the artist and farmer Martin Jonas (1924-1996), who is considered one of the founders of the world famous naive “peasant primitive” school of painting in Kovacica, Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia) during the mid 20th century. His work has often been compared to the original American outsider Grandma Moses. This 1962 canvas by Jonas, which appears to portray an almost biblical scene of two itinerates sheltering in a barn with their newborn child, arrived at the shop yesterday. The work displays his strong sense of color and an attention to the fine details that only one attuned to the rhythms of the farm might include within the scene.
