About the Item
Michael Upton, British 1938-2002, oil on card, Cornish landscape with helicopter is a great example of Upton's work painted in the last couple of decades of his life when he moved to Cornwall.
This work was acquired between 2 — 17 Apr 2014 from the Messums Gallery in London who look after Michael Upton's artistic estate and had a show of his work in 2014. Its a vibrant image and his use of brush stroke here is exquisite.
He exhibited widely in the UK having several solo shows in London, mainly at the Anne Berthed Gallery, as well as in New York in 1987 at the Yale Centre for British Art and the Anthony Ralph Gallery in New York..
Upton’s work can now be found in important public and private collections throughout Britain and the United States. But perhaps more importantly, these works are still available to serious collectors of modern British art.
His small, refined studies of time and place illustrate a bridge between the Sickertian poetry of everyday life and the often acerbic challenges to this life posed by artists such as Richard Hamilton and Patrick Caulfield (who knew and admired Upton’s work).
As such, Upton’s paintings are not only covetable in their own right, but would enhance any collector’s enjoyment and understanding of modern and contemporary British painting.

View AllMarc Vaux, British b1932, Oil on Board 1957
By Marc Vaux
Located in Oxford, GB
Marc Vaux is a British artist who rose to prominence in the 1960s. His work was included in the seminal Situation exhibition of 1960 alongside Robyn Denny, William Turnbull and Bernard Cohen among others. This exhibition was a direct reaction by British abstract artists to the recent exhibitions in London of the American Abstract Expressionists in particular the Tate's 1959 exhibition The New American Painting.
This painting is an early work and was given to the vendor by Marc Vaux’s wife . It explores Vuax’s early fascination and love of colour. Using a minimal palette Vaux extracts so much information from what he’s seeing putting it down on board in the most effervescent and exquisite manner
In 1986, Vaux was appointed Head of Painting at the Central/St Martins College of Art and Design in London where he stayed until he retired in 1989 to concentrate full-time on painting
Vaux's work has variously been described as minimalist and constructivist although since his primary interest is in colour and light he has more in common with the American west coast artists than the New York minimalists...
