About the Item

An intriguing landscape study in textured medium and Ochre colours. Offered here is a particularly good example of Brutalist decorative art from the 1970s. In addition, the work is finished with a wide (and beautifully made) limed and gilded cedar frame. This work is great for adding intense color and deep texture. It generates glowing warmth on the wall. It sits really well among other works and needs some color saturation around it to get the most out of it. That is, if you don't want it to punch so hard. It has a level of quality and taste in the framing choice that makes the whole more than the sum of it's parts. There's a nice shadow line around the mounted work on board, then a fine gilt champher and a wide flat plane of limed cedar, beautifully champhered to the outer edge. The frame makes the whole work sit right off the wall and casts a nice shadow line itself. Beautifully conceived work and beautifully framed. It looks like it just stepped off the pages of a 1970s copy of Architectural Digest. Yum. About the artist: Aina Nicmanis is an Australian artist of Latvian heritage. Her work can be found in public and private collections across Australia. She was most active from 1959 to the end of the 1970s. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, pottery, and weaving. Her paintings have been included in major prizes in Australia, such as the Wynne prize. The Wynne Prize (established 1897) is an annual Australian art prize awarded by the Art Gallery of NSW for the best landscape painting of Australian scenery or the best example of figurative sculpture by an Australian artist. It showcases artists' responses to the land. An entry to the Wynne prize by Nicmanus was acquired by the Art Gallery of NSW in 1975. Her works primarily explore the Australian landscape through materiality, texture and bold, direct colour, setting a mood that is immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with the Australian landscape.

'Beach Camp' Modernist Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery, 1984
By Anne Montgomery
Located in Melbourne, AU
Anne Montgomery has been considered for many years one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett and Lina Bryans, her work is now recognised as an important part of Australian modernism. The breadth and quality of Montgomery's work over a long lifetime has always been appreciated by other artists. As Australian women artists in the mid Century period were relegated to the fringes of the establishment, they freely explored their own vision and developed their own style. Montgomery's work richly deserves the attention it's now receiving. This work shows Montgomery's unique perception and expression of colour in the Australian landscape. Her use of oil on board gives her work a robust structure but the inclusion of ink sketching in the work gives it a delicate texture. Her foliage and grasses tickle, her fabric floats, trees dance - her landscapes are in constant movement. This painting depicts a family camping under canvas amongst the Tea...
