“Vue de Nice French Riviera”
Signed Tchiquine Desboutin 1897
This painting represents the city of Nice in the French Riviera from the end of the 19th century.
In the foreground, a large olive grove, an essential agricultural crop in this region. In the background the city is taking shape, the Bay of Angels opens completely across the entire width of the painting. We find the famous Casino on a pontoon overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Casino destroyed by the Germans in 1944.
In the background of the painting the relief of St Jean Cap Ferrat and Mont Boron.
This painting is a precious testimony to the past of the French Riviera and the city of Nice. Tchiquine Desboutin painter from the city of Nice born 1876, is a regional artist specializing in the landscapes of the French Riviera.
The French Riviera from the end of the 19th century welcomed the greatest painters. This region offered light, lush vegetation, the Mediterranean Sea and carefreeness. From Monet to Renoir via Matisse, Chagall... all have stopped off on the French Riviera
