About the Item

A pair of Georgian English 19th century portraits of a gentleman and a woman, oil on canvas, original frame and stretcher, crackle paint (stable condition) typical of older paintings of this vintage. The paintings are marked on verso, Painted by Ben. Hudson 1828 & 1829. The original gilt frame is in fair condition, with minor loss to edges, new wire and eye hooks. The painting in the frame measures 32 1/2"- inches high x 30"- inches wide and 1 1/2"-inches deep. The portrait painting in the stretcher only measures 22"- inches x 20"-inches wide.

Strong and clear impression, overall very good condition, paper has a light oxidation and restored small tear middle left side Framed, no glazing This hand colored print is of a young girl and two goats standing near a stream in a forested area. The girl is wearing a knee-length dress with short puffed sleeves and long stockings. She is feeding a goat with flowers and grass from her apron. The original "Shepherdess of the Alps" appears to have been a play by Marmontel, which enjoyed great popularity in France, England, and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
