Renaissance Paintings

RENAISSANCE STYLE

Spanning an era of cultural rebirth in Europe that harkened back to antiquity, the Renaissance was a time of change in design. From the late 1400s to the early 1600s, Rome, Venice and Florence emerged as artistic centers through the expansion of global trade and a humanist belief in the arts being central to society. Antique Renaissance furniture was ornately carved from sturdy woods like walnut, its details standing out against the tapestries and stained glass adorning the walls.

Renaissance chests, which were frequently commissioned for marriages, were often decorated with gilding or painted elements. Those that were known as cassoni were crafted in shapes based on classical sarcophagi. As opposed to the medieval era, when furniture was pared down to the necessities, a wide range of Renaissance chairs, tables and cabinets were created for the home, and the designs regularly referenced ancient Rome.

Large torchères of the Renaissance era that were used as floor lamps were inspired by classical candelabras, while marble surfaces evoked frescoes. The inlaid boxes being imported from the Middle East informed the intarsia technique, which involved varying hues of wood in mosaic-like patterns, such as those by architect Giuliano da Maiano in the Florence Cathedral.

Tapestry-woven cushion covers accented the variety of Renaissance seating — from conversation to study chairs — while bookcases for secular use reflected the migration of culture and knowledge from the church into the home. The aesthetics of the Italian Renaissance later spread to France through the publishing of work by renowned designers, including Hugues Sambin and Jacques Androuet du Cerceau. Centuries later, the 19th-century Renaissance Revival would see a return to this influential style.

‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’ No.6. Art Print Photo by Sinke & Van Tongeren
Located in Haarlem, NL
The third series of photographs by fine Taxidermists Sinke & Van Tongeren After observing and analysing so many 17th century paintings, they were inspired to create a new series of work focused on still life masterpieces. They chose photography as the medium to portray their fine Taxidermy work interpreted through vanitas still lifes. The collection, ‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’, comprises eight works. Vanitas still lifes were enormously popular in the 17th century, often inspired by biblical themes and the saying that “All is vanity”. It reminded the viewer of his or her own mortality. For these series of still lifes Sinke & van Tongeren not only created meaningful scenes of taxidermy, they also mined their enormous collection of great finds to gather the most beautiful and unusual antiques to complement each scene. Title of this work; ’RÉUNION D’OISEAUX ÉTRANGERS’ Cabinets of curiosity were of monumental importance in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Assembling them with interesting and rare objects was a competitive hobby amongst the elite, and to collect a great number of mounted species from everywhere in the world was the Holy Grail of the day. For ‘Réunion d’oiseaux étrangers’, we created that Holy Grail again, but this time stocking our cabinet with seemingly live species. This plentiful composition is staged in a cabinet with different boxes holding rare species such as a Toco Toucan, Scarlet ibis, Cock of the Rock...

"The Entombment of Christ, " Fine Copy of Titian Masterpiece, Oil on Canvas
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully painted, probably in the 19th or early 20th centuries, this copy of the famed "Le Transport du Christ au Tombeau" painting by Titian (Tiziano) in the collection of the Louvre in Paris, was recently found in the attic of a Hudson Valley monastery. The Louvre original, considered an early painting by the master, dates to the same period as his famous "Pastoral Concert" and shows the strong influence of Gorgione. This scene depicts the collaborative efforts of Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John and Nicodemus as they moved Christ's body from the cross to his tomb, watched by the two grieving Marys -- his mother and Mary Magdalene. It is not known who painted this copy, though of course artists over the years have copied the great Master paintings...

Art Book "Giorgione: Myth and Enigma"
Located in New York, NY
Giorgione: Myth and Enigma Edited by Sylvia Ferino-Pagden and Giovanna Nepi Scirè Published by Skira (2004) Hardcover 310 pages Black and white and color illustrations Description from the publisher: "The myth of Giorgione as a painter interested in poetry, music and philosophy as well as in alchemy and astrology still overshadows our knowledge of his life and art. Though celebrated as the father of modern Venetian painting in the 16th century, the teacher of Titian and other artists, his oeuvre still remains very small and we know only very little about his life. In his revolutionary brushwork Giorgione skillfully combines Leonardo´s sfumato with the colors and the thin layers of paint favoured by the Old Netherlandish masters to add a new dimension to color through light. It is impossible to construct a generally accepted catalogue of his work, and the mysterious subjects of his paintings have engendered numerous mutually incompatible interpretations. As we still do not have any secure textual sources for works such as La Tempesta, these interpretations are more a reflection of the individual breadth of knowledge of the interpreter or of changing art-historical fashions than Giorgione´s own ideas. The chance to contrast and compare these two paintings from Venice with the Kunsthistorisches Museum´s unique holdings of masterpieces by Giorgione is made possible by this long awaited comprehensive show of the master´s most famous autograph works. Apart from the two paintings mentioned above – the Three Philosophers and Laura – the Kunsthistorisches Museum holds four other paintings with long provenances attributed to Giorgione: Boy with an Arrow, the so-called Girolamo Marcello, Boy with a Helmet, and Adoration of the Shepherds. In addition, the show boasts important loans from other museums, for example the Madonna Benson from the National Gallery in Washington, the Portrait of a Youth...
