About the Item

Best known for her depictions of New Mexico and the Southwest, here Virginia True painted a brilliantly-hued Cubist scene reflecting her years in New York. Showing the influence of Picasso, Leger and Kandinsky, True suggests a fractured terrace scene -- with hints of a liquor bottle, martini glass, palm fronds and scalloped napkins -- perhaps from her home in Ithaca or an apartment in New York City. Her colors -- lemon yellow, cobalt blue, pumpkin orange and deep red -- are vivid, and the scene is full of life. True received training in Philadelphia, New York and Indianapolis, and spent years painting in Colorado before she moved to Ithaca to teach at Cornell University. In our opinion, this is her most important abstract work. (Dimensions include frame.)

"Cubist Forms in Blue and Red, " Brilliant Painting by Gleizes, Abstract Cubism
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most brilliantly-hued paintings by Albert Gleizes we have seen, this highly abstract Cubist work is a rotating knot of curving forms in periwinkle, carmen, olive green, sky blue, burnt sienna and grey flannel, as vivid now as when it was painted a hundred years ago. Early in his life he was influenced by Fernand Leger, Robert Delauney...

"Burlesque and Cubist Composition", Two-Sided Painting by William L'Engle
By William L'Engle
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Brilliant and memorable, this painting has two sides: a scene of nude burlesque dancers, ornamented in red feathers and red shoes on one side, and on the other, a highly abstract, Cubist composition in tones of taupe, wine, pale green and black. The artist was William L'Engle, and clearly he considered the Cubist composition more important, because it has a hand-painted border and is monogrammed. L'Engle was a towering figure in the Provincetown art colony, and was extremely well connected to America's artistic elite, starting with his trip to Europe as a young man with Waldo Pierce and George Biddle. Over time, William and his life Lucy became close to a wide range of important figures in painting, theater and the arts, including Charles Hawthorne, Eugene O'Neill, Gerrit Beneker, John Dos Passos, Edmund Wilson...
