A Walasse Ting Chinese Acrylics on Paper 'Two Geishas and Parrots' Painting

About the Item

An Important and Large Walasse Ting Chinese Acrylics on Paper 'Two Geishas and Parrots' Painting. This painting is by Walasse Ting (1929–2010), a Chinese-American artist known for his vibrant use of color and expressive brushwork. The piece is signed with the artist's seal in the lower left corner. Ting’s work blends Abstract Expressionism with Chinese brush painting, often depicting women, birds, and nature in bold compositions. The painting features a standing female figure in a deep purple robe, decorated with small parrots in green, yellow, and blue. Her exposed skin is painted in soft pink tones, contrasting with the vivid background. A second figure with closed eyes appears behind her, surrounded by abstracted fish and foliage. Expressive black outlines and fluid watercolor washes define the forms, with pigments bleeding naturally into one another. Walasse Ting painted with spontaneous, gestural brushstrokes, often combining ink and color in a calligraphic manner. His compositions balance strong linear elements with saturated, fluorescent hues. This painting reflects his signature approach, blending Eastern and Western influences through vibrant color and layered imagery. Circa: 1980 Painting: 69" x 37": framed 77" x 46" under glass in floating frame. Provenance: From the Zoullas Collection Christie's Amsterdam June 21, 2001 Lot 310

Charles Stuart (British 1838-1907) "Their Mountain Home" from 1895-1897 is on oil on canvas and is signed as well as dated. This gorgeous highland landscape depicts a stag herd retreating down the mountain from the impending mists. Stuart captures the swirling movement and material quality of the fog, which obscures the towering mountains adding an element of mystery and magic to the painting. In juxtaposition, the foreground of the painting is rendered in precise detail from the rippling tides to the leaves of grass. Each stag is differentiated adding an element of naturalism. Charles Stuart, F. S. A. was a landscape painter active from 1881 to 1904. Born to a long line of painters, Stuart exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy.
