King Günther von Schwarzburg: The Warrior Monarch, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
This handcolored original antique print features a figure labeled "Gunther de Schwarzbourg, roi des Romains," which identifies him as Günther von Schwarzburg, a German king. He is depicted in a traditional gothic archway that frames the illustration, reminiscent of a church's stained glass window. In the illustration, Günther is clad in armor, with a chainmail coif and a helmet adorned with a crown, indicating his royal status. The blue tunic worn over his armor is embellished with a pattern of fleur-de-lis, a symbol often associated with royalty. He also has golden arm and leg guards, and his red belt stands...

The Scales of Justice: An English Criminal Judge in Traditional Robes, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
The image is labeled "Juge criminel anglais," which translates to "English Criminal Judge." The figure depicted is wearing a long, flowing robe with a blue undergarment and a red cape, which is indicative of the traditional robes worn by English judges, especially in higher courts. The judge also wears a white coif, which was a typical head covering for English judges and serjeants-at-law. He carries a staff, which may symbolize authority or the office of the judiciary. His belt is richly decorated, suggesting the importance and high status of his position within the legal system. The robes and coif show significant detail, such as the fur lining on the cape and the gold fastening on the belt, which alludes to the formality and solemnity of the judicial office. The judge's expression is stern and somber, reflecting the serious nature of his role in adjudicating criminal matters. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting. Egg yolk helps to create a durable and long-lasting color that adheres well to various surfaces. In the context of the print from 1847, it's less likely that egg whites or yolks were used directly on the print, as by that time, commercial printing processes would have been more advanced and less reliant on such manual methods. However, if this print is a representation of an earlier style or is meant to mimic the appearance of hand-painted manuscripts...

Courtly Splendor: A Nobleman at Emperor Sigismund's Court, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
The image depicts a man identified as a "Gentilhomme de la cour de Sigismond, empereur d'Allemagne," which translates to "Gentleman of the court of Sigismund, Emperor of Germany." This individual is portrayed in a profile stance, dressed in attire that is indicative of the high-status courtiers during the time of Emperor Sigismund, who reigned in the early 15th century. He is wearing a turban-like headgear, which reflects the influence of Eastern fashion on European court attire, possibly due to the Ottoman influence or the general exchange of culture during the Crusades and subsequent interactions. His doublet is richly patterned and he has puffed sleeves in red, which were fashionable among the nobility during the period. The garment is accented with a decorative belt that holds what appears to be a purse or a pouch. He also sports tight blue hose and pointed shoes, which complete the ensemble typical of a nobleman or a high-ranking court official in the Holy Roman Empire. Scholar of the Codex: A Medieval Jurist in Study, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
The image depicts a person labeled "Docteur des Lois," which translates to "Doctor of Laws." This term historically refers to an individual who has achieved advanced scholarly status in the field of law, equivalent to the modern term "Juris Doctor." The figure is seated at a lectern, deeply engrossed in a large book, which likely represents legal texts or scholarly works. The individual is attired in a robe with a fur-lined cape, suggesting a status of academic or professional distinction. The robe is red, a color often associated with higher education and learning. The headwear appears to be a type of turban, which was a common academic regalia in certain cultures and times. The setting and attire suggest that this person is a scholar or a high-ranking legal professional, possibly a university professor or a magistrate from the medieval or Renaissance period. Antique and Vintage Prints for Wall Decor

Prints are works of art produced in multiple editions. Though several copies of a specific artwork can exist, collectors consider antique and vintage prints originals when they have been manually created by the artist or are “impressions” that are part of the artist’s intent for the work.

Modern artists use a range of printmaking techniques to produce different types of prints such as relief, intaglio and planographic. Relief prints are created by cutting away a printing surface to leave only a design. Ink or paint is applied to the raised parts of the surface, and it is used to stamp or press the design onto paper or another surface. Relief prints include woodcuts, linocuts and engravings.

Intaglio prints are the opposite of relief prints in that they are incised into the printing surface. The artist cuts the design into a block, plate or other material and then coats it with ink before wiping off the surface and transferring the design to paper through tremendous pressure. Intaglio prints have plate marks showing the impression of the original block or plate as it was pressed onto the paper.

Artists create planographic prints by drawing a design on a stone or metal plate using a grease crayon. The plate is washed with water, then ink is spread over the plate and it adheres to the grease markings. The image is then stamped on paper to make prints.

All of these printmaking methods have an intricate process, although each can usually transfer only one color of ink. Artists use separate plates or blocks for multiple colors, and together these create one finished work of art.

Find prints ranging from the 18th- and 19th-century bird illustrations by J.C. Sepp to mid-century modern prints, as well as numerous other antique and vintage prints at 1stDibs. Browse the collection today and read about how to arrange wall art in your space.
