About the Item

Titled "Reverie" (or "Dream"), this lithograph by Alphonse Mucha is one of his most noted and most desirable printed designs. The original use of the design was as an in-house poster for the printer Champenois, used to usher in the new year of 1898. The design shows an elegant woman in repose, leafing through what may be a sample book of printer's designs, while confronting the viewer with a soft and alluring gaze. The circular halo surrounding her, decorated with intricate floral motifs, is one of the most elaborate Mucha ever used, as well as one of the largest in terms of its relation to the size of the picture. Item #: ML-21625 Artist: Alphonse Mucha Country: France Circa: 1897 Dimensions: 18.875" height, 14" width. Materials: Lithograph paper, Giltwood gesso frame Signed: Mucha Documentation: A. Framed. Literature: Lithograph pictured in Rennert/Weill, 39; Lendl/Prague, p. 166; Gold, 36; PAI-LXXX, 427 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: As stated by the Mucha Foundation; Like Zodiac, this lithograph was originally designed to serve as the 1898 Champenois company calendar. However, its immediate popularity led to its swift publication by the magazine La Plume as a decorative panel with the title Reverie (daydream). Mucha's design shows a dreamy-eyed young woman leafing through a book of decorative designs, possibly printers' samples. The prominent disk behind her is elaborately decorated with flowers and their stems forming a lace-like pattern.

"Princess Hyacinthe" Original 1911 Lithograph, Alphonse Mucha
By Alphonse Mucha
Located in Chicago, IL
“One of Mucha’s best Czech posters, printed by the firm of V. Neubert in the Smichov quarter of Prague, was for Princezna Hyacinta, a fairy-tale ballet and pantomime with music by Oskar Nedbal and libretto by Ladislav Novák. The portrait of the popular actress Andula Sedlácková as the princess dominates the poster. The plot develops as a dream of a village blacksmith who falls asleep after digging for a buried treasure. In his dreams he becomes lord of a castle, and his daughter Hanicka becomes the Princess Hyacinth. Of her three suitors, one is a sorcerer who abducts her to his underground palace, but she is rescued by a poor knight who looks like her real-life lover. Mucha used the motif of the hyacinth throughout the entire design, from embroideries to silver jewelry, and for an elaborate circle sparkling against the mossy green background. The portrait of the actress is seen against a sky full of stars and encircled with images from the dream: the blacksmith’s tools...
