About the Item

French Costumes and Trades – 3 Finely Coloured Prints by R. Bridgens, 1835 This striking set of three finely coloured antique prints captures the vibrant and varied costumes and trades of 19th-century France, offering a glimpse into both urban and rural life. Published in 1835 by J. Dowding, London, these prints are from the remarkable volume “Illustrations of the Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland and Italy” by R. Bridgens. Bridgens, known for his keen attention to cultural detail and lively scenes, created a visual document that appeals to collectors and cultural historians alike. The first print portrays a “French Pilot Conducting the Packet to the Harbour”, showing the pilot in a red cap and long blue coat, gesturing towards the sea, accompanied by a companion resting by a coil of rope. This maritime scene is full of character and motion, capturing the pilot’s role in guiding vessels to port safely. It has to be noted that this print has a hole in the paper in the top right, but outside the plate-mark and thus outside the image area. The second image, titled “Costumes at Dieppe”, depicts a woman and child in traditional regional dress, standing near a crucifix and village buildings. Their attire – including the woman’s elaborate headdress and vivid skirt – is meticulously hand-coloured, highlighting regional craftsmanship and the cultural identity of Dieppe. The third image, “French Postillion”, illustrates a coachman seen from behind, seated confidently on his horse and holding a whip. His striking blue jacket, red sash, and checkered pouch add bright accents that enliven the print. This piece captures the essential role of postillions in 19th-century French travel, a reminder of a time before railways and motorcars. These prints are cherished not only for their historical insight but also for the lively, hand-coloured details that showcase Bridgens’ skill as an illustrator. They reflect a fascination with the daily lives, dress, and traditions of the period. Condition Summary: These prints are in good condition, with minor age-related toning and light foxing. The colours remain vivid and bright, retaining their historical charm. Framing Tips: Use a soft ivory or light cream mount with a simple, natural wood or black frame to highlight the vivid hand-colouring. UV-protective glass will help preserve their colours and detail.
