About the Item

Journey of Devotion: Capuchin Lay Brother in Action, Plate 47 This captivating 19th-century lithograph from *Album ou Collection Complète, et Historique des Costumes de la Cour de Rome* features a lay brother of the Capuchin order. His brown habit, knotted cord, and humble sandals emphasize his dedication to a life of simplicity and service. The brother is portrayed in motion, carrying provisions—a sack over his shoulder and a basket featuring intricate religious symbols—highlighting his role in assisting the poor and supporting his community. The figure’s rugged demeanor, with a beard and resolute expression, encapsulates the essence of Capuchin humility and hard work. The muted background draws focus to his action and symbolism, making this lithograph a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and compassion. Historical Context: The Capuchins, a branch of the Franciscan order, were established in 1528 and are renowned for their emphasis on poverty and charity. Lay brothers, while not ordained, often fulfilled essential tasks within the order, including manual labor and caregiving. This image reflects their practical devotion, as they carried out Christ’s teachings through action rather than ceremony. Provenance: Lithographed by A. Lemaître in Paris and illustrated by G. Perugini, this piece is part of a broader collection documenting the diversity of ecclesiastical attire and roles within the Catholic Church during the 1800s. Plate 47 captures the selfless ethos of the Capuchin lay brother, immortalizing their enduring contributions to society.

Carme Déchaussé - 1862 Hand-Colored Lithograph of a Discalced Carmelite Monk
Located in Langweer, NL
Carme Déchaussé - 1862 Hand-Colored Lithograph of a Discalced Carmelite Monk This stunning 1862 hand-colored lithograph portrays a Carme Déchaussé, or Discalced Carmelite monk, an emblem of humility and devotion. The figure is depicted in the characteristic simple brown habit and white mantle, with sandals on his feet—true to the order's name, which means "without shoes." The lithograph is part of the Album ou Collection Complète et Historique des Costumes de la Cour de Rome, a richly illustrated publication that details the diverse attire of Catholic orders and clergy. The Discalced Carmelites, a reform of the Carmelite Order established by Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross in the 16th century, emphasize poverty, prayer, and community. Their attire reflects these values, remaining largely unchanged through centuries and still in use today by members of the order worldwide. This print captures the austerity and spiritual focus of their mission. Created by G. Perugini and accompanied by explanatory texts from Père Hélyot, this lithograph is a unique artistic and historical record. It offers insight into the traditions of one of the Catholic Church's most contemplative orders, making it an excellent piece for collectors interested in religious art, ecclesiastical history, or the evolution of monastic life. Translation of Introduction Text: A powerful interest is attached to the name of Rome, an even more profound interest to the name of Christ. Rome, through its genius, the vast intelligence of its warriors, orators, and legislators, prepared the cradle where Catholicism would be born, grow, develop, and establish itself. The history of Catholicism is the history of this great and glorious city above all others. Virgil, in a truly prophetic verse, said: "Tu regere imperio populos, Romane, memento." This prophecy has seen the most noble, illustrious, and glorious developments, all conspiring for the eternal city's glory: its history, arts, monuments, and the religion at its core. Yet no other city offers such a collection, from the monuments of Augustus to those of Sixtus V and Leo XII, from pagan temples to saints' tombs and martyrs' shrines. This union of grandeur is further illustrated daily by the magnificence of Catholic rites. With this album, we present the splendid costumes of the Papal dignitaries and the humble attire of religious orders. These costumes were inspired by the traditions handed down through centuries and were designed with unique precision by the talented artist G. Perugini.
