About the Item

The Worshipper, 2004 by Luc Tuymans is a large format silkscreen limited print edition of 100. Each is signed and numbered by Luc Tuymans and comes with a special edition monograph of Luc Tuymans, both presented in a beautiful and unique case. Belgian artists Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) is considered one of the most significant and influential contemporary painters working today. His work fuses the traditions of Old Master Flemish and Spanish still-life genres painting with a late-twentieth-century sensibility. Celebrated as one of the world's most gifted visionary painters, Tuymans has been creating iconic works of art for nearly three decades. For The Worshipper he collaborated with a master printer in Antwerp to create a screen-print based on his 2004 painting of the same name, the source of which was a photograph Tuymans took in the Musée International du Carnaval et du Masque in the Belgian town of Binche. 'I was mostly using Polariods, which attenuate the colours, making things unclear and imprecise. Polaroids don't provide the same accuracy as digital or film photography, and they present more inconsistencies. I like to work with materials that are inconsistent because they leave more room for interpretation.' As in much of Tuymans' best work, the bearded figure in occupies an enigmatic role, in this case a cleric of indeterminate faith engaged in an ambiguous ceremony. Amplifying this sense of mystery is Tuymans' unmistakable palette, with its modulated greens and yellows. The effect is a timelessness that transcends both subject and form. As Ulrich Loock writes in the accompanying volume, Tuymans 'appears to be seeking an escape from the compulsory discourse of modernism, as if the works have their place somewhere else entirely.' This place, so hauntingly evoked in The Worshipper, is Tuymans' great artistic discovery.

Michael Bauer Baba Creme Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
Print Full bleed six-color silkscreen printed on Letra Ecru 300 gsm Measures: 34.00 x 24.50 in 86.4 x 62.2 cm Edition of 50 This work is signed and numbered by the artist on recto. The imagery for this edition is derived in part from what Michael Bauer calls his “telephone drawings”—quick, loose sketches made while talking on the phone or otherwise distracted. Bauer saves these doodles, no matter how rough or silly, and uses them as raw materials to be copied, scanned, altered, and combined. Bauer often works in series, making groups of paintings that metaphorically “talk back” to one another while simultaneously standing on their own as individual works. As he says, “Every painting that I do relies on the last twenty I did.” In a neat literalization of his process, this print includes the words “baba” and “creme,” recurring terms Bauer uses as verbal readymades for their phonetic qualities and mutable meanings. The amorphic, animalistic forms of German painter Michael Bauer are built upon color washes, meandering lines, and bulbous protrusions. Utilizing a variety of rendering techniques and materials, including pointillism, text and high-chroma colors, Bauer transforms his free-form compositions into dynamic and ornamented abstractions. He borrows from the colorful tradition of Modernist composition, juxtaposing collaged cutouts with a bevy of 20th century painting methodologies—including Cubist, Pop, and Surrealist techniques—to make the swirling paintings...

He formed The Talking Heads with fellow RISD student, Chris Frantz, and Frantz's girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, in 1975 while living in New York City. In 1990 he founded the world music record label Luaka Bop, which released music from artists including Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, and Zap Mama. Byrne's solo career has been broad and multi-disciplinary. Since the 1990s, Byrne has exhibited his visual artwork at numerous galleries including Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City. In 2006 he released Arboretum, a collection of his philosophical drawings, published by McSweeney's. Byrne's drawings are what he calls "mental maps of imaginary territory." Says Byrne, "if you can draw a relationship, it can exist... the world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising." In 2010, Byrne exhibited his piece "Guitar Pedals...
