About the Item

Antique Print of a Mancelle Cow – Riffaut, 1862 This antique lithograph, titled Vache Mancelle (Mancelle Cow), depicts a fine specimen of the Mancelle breed, historically raised in the region of Le Mans, France. Shown in profile within a pastoral landscape, the cow is carefully rendered to highlight the breed’s distinctive form—slender yet strong, with fine bone structure and well-defined musculature. The lithograph was executed by A. Riffaut and printed by Lemercier in Paris in 1862, as part of a comprehensive series of plates dedicated to French livestock breeds. These prints were intended not only as works of art but also as valuable scientific and agricultural references, commissioned during the mid-19th century when great emphasis was placed on improving and cataloguing domestic animal breeds. The Mancelle cow, though less common today, was once highly valued for its dual-purpose qualities, producing both milk and beef, and was a recognizable breed at agricultural fairs and expositions in 19th-century France. This lithograph preserves its likeness at a time when French agriculture was rapidly modernizing and regional breeds were being studied with renewed interest. Condition report: Strong, detailed impression with soft shading and fine tonal gradation. Some light foxing and faint age toning in the margins, consistent with age. Wide margins intact and overall presentation very good. Framing tips: A natural wood frame in walnut or oak with a cream mat will complement the earthy tones of the lithograph. Alternatively, a black frame with a warm ivory mat will provide a more formal, gallery-style presentation, enhancing the historical character of the piece. Technique: Lithograph Maker: A. Riffaut, lithographed by Lemercier, Paris, 1862
