About the Item

On 3rd July 1973 Stephen Shore (b.1947) set out on a road trip. The journey marked an important turning point in his career, as he was coming to the tail end of American Surfaces and embarking on what came to be known as Uncommon Places. In the month-long journal that Shore kept on his trip, he itemized, in a deadpan, unemotional style, everywhere he stayed, what he ate, what television programmes he watched and how many miles he drove; he also included postcards of the towns that he stayed in, glued in alongside hotel, restaurant and gas-station receipts and a listing of every photograph he took on the way. As he travelled, he photographed the towns and cities he drove through, the people he met, the food he ate, the beds he slept in, from New York to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, from San Francisco to Holbrook, Arizona and onwards. By the 13th July he had arrived in South Dakota. On the 14th he had cereal for breakfast, steak for lunch and a blt for dinner. He stayed in the El Centro Motel in Kadoka and watched the Mary Tyler Moore show. During the day he made eight exposures. One of them was of this apparently unexceptional yellow cabin with a telegraph pole, a bush and car parked neatly beside it. Stephen Shore is a master of making us think about the ordinary in an extraordinary way. Stephen Shore is one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. A pioneer of colour photography, his photographs of everyday American scenes paved the way for future art photographers like Martin Parr, Nan Goldin and Thomas Struth. This special, highly collectible, limited edition book – numbered and signed by the photographer – is a complete reproduction of the journal that Shore made on a month-long American road trip in 1973, during which he began work on his influential project Uncommon Places. In the journal Shore included his own photographs, lists detailing information on his travels like where he stayed, what he ate, how many miles he drove, and various ephemera like receipts and postcards. Each page of the journal is reproduced along with a plate section featuring every photograph he took on his journey to provide the complete story of the journey at this seminal moment in his career. The book also includes a set of postcards, reproductions of cards that Shore himself made and distributed on his journey, to ensure this is an essential title for any collector, photography enthusiast, or student. Specifications: C-type print (tritone) Sheet size: 355 x 430 mm (14 x 17 inches). Box: 482 x 362 mm (19 x 14 1/4 inches). Printed in 2009 in an edition of 100 plus 5 artist's proofs. Jeff Wall Fortified Door Print 2008
Located in New York, NY
The documentary image fortified door is a portrait of urban defence that denies entry not only to visitors but also to the viewer. Tightly cropped and shot nearly head-on, it offers little information about its location or context (although small clues can be found at the edges of the photo). The door and the picture of it share a particularly ambivalent position in time, quoting idioms from the past but bearing traces of the present. Jeff Wall adopts the 19th century poet Baudelaire's famous description of one of his contemporaries as "a painter of modern life" to describe his own very different work: huge transparencies mounted onto light boxes which diffuse a brilliant glow of white light evenly through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations. Jeff Wall is foremost among the pioneering artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. His constructed images employ the latest sophisticated technology in the creation of compelling tableaux, which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When exhibited in their glowing light boxes they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures such as Dan Flavin's fluorescent light installations or Donald Judd's metal and Perspex wall reliefs. All of these elements - traditional figurative painting, cinema, minimalism, conceptual art, documentary photography - are consciously evoked and explored in Wall's work. Associated closely since the late 1960s with conceptual artists such as Dan Graham...

Highway 26, Shoshoni, Wyoming; June 9, 2021, color photograph, signed
By Steve Fitch
Located in Sante Fe, NM
"Highway 26, Shoshoni, Wyoming; June 9, 2021" is a color photograph by Steve Fitch. This piece is printed by the artist using archival pigment inks and is signed. In American Motel Signs, Steve Fitch documents the changing landscape, capturing the bright neon motel signs littered across long highway expanses throughout the West. The delightful photographs in this series, map out Fitch’s extensive journey to seek out a typology of visual relics that are quickly fading into the American collective memory. For Fitch, these motel signs carry an unquestionable enchantment in their folk originality — the blocky fonts and garish designs. His work is a road trip to the past, down lonesome highways where these emblems of roadside American...
