About the Item

MAARTEN BAAS, EARLY SMOKE CABINET Important and rare piece of Dutch design of one of the most influential design of our time. Provenance. From a hairdressing salon in Amsterdam that Maarten Baas decorated in the early period of the Smoke series. (+- in 2002) Most of the interior was auctioned at Pierre Bergé auction house in Brussels (December 16, 2010). Only this piece of furniture was kept by the then owner himself. In 2014, this shelve was also exhibited at the exhibition “Feeling good” at Galerie Steendrukkerij in Amsterdam. After graduating he was asked to work on an interior for cult hairdresser Le Souk in Amsterdam. Baas created a series of unique cabinets and interior items from charred blackened wood, including this one. An iconic and early piece, bringing to mind other iconic modernist pieces like the Nuage Bookshelf (1960s) from Charlotte Perriand. Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven with his “Smoke” series, Maarten Baas has pushed the boundaries of art, design and aesthetics. “Smoke” is an investigation into beauty and (im-)perfection. “In nature, everything is in flux, creating a certain beauty. Yet, it’s a very human tendency to keep things as they are supposed to be and keep them as they originally were. Smoke plays with both perceptions of beauty.” After the pieces are charcoaled, they are preserved in a clear epoxy resin, making them functional again. The first pieces were made in 2002 and the collection has expanded with commissions both for museums as well as private clients. In 2004, Moss gallery NY collaborated on the “Where There’s Smoke” series with a collection of design icons by Rietveld, Gaudi, Eames and Sottsass, burnt by Maarten Baas.

Unique Emiel Veranneman, 1996
By Emiel Veranneman
Located in Meulebeke, BE
Sideboard designed by the Belgian designer Emiel Veranneman produced by Decoene. Made of lacquered wood in gray-blue color with a yellow accent in the door. One-of-a-kind furniture made for the previous owner. "From 1960 Emiel Veranneman began to concentrate his efforts exclusively on furniture creations and interior decorations for clients, an evolution due to a profound dissatisfaction with the prevailing rules of the furniture industry. The result was an impressive series of unique creations with the most important characteristics: harmony, monumental, tension, power and intellectual outflow. One could call Emiel Veranneman's art furniture more radical and stubborn. an art form that is not impressed by the rules of the economy, nor by the fashionable desires of the public, least of all by the promptings of its clients or by artistic trends. All this makes it possible to really call Emiel Veranneman a monument in furniture art. His art stands alone among his contemporaries." (Veranneman, Visie & Passie, p.162-163) Please note that the piece is in good vintage condition with some minor user damage. Comes with the original design drawing...
