Located in Norwich, GB
Das Dreyzehige Faulthier. Bradypus tridactylus.
The pale-throated sloth, occasionally known as the ai, is a species of three-toed sloth that inhabits tropical rainforests in northern South America. It is similar in appearance to, and often confused with, the brown-throated sloth, which has a much wider distribution.
Landmark stone lithograph on fine Ziegler watermarked paper.
Extremely rare
1816 antique hand colored stone lithograph by Carl Joseph Brodtmann from his extremely rare series:
Naturhistorische Bilder Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche
Lindau, Brodtmann [1816].
Here in fine original hand colour.
Measures : 42.5 x 32.5 cm
Superb plate from this famed incunabula of lithography.
Reference Winkler 105.
Brodtmann is considered a pioneer in the art of lithography employing techniques for "texture" that are quite similar to that of an aquatint. He produced his lithographs in the post-Linnaean "Age of Enlightenment" as books illustrations and sets of natural history prints, as Naturhistorische Bilder Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche, with the more expensive sets being hand coloured. Natural history specimens...

English Georgian Thomas Luny Original Oil "Retrieving the Grog before the Storm"
By Thomas Luny
Located in Wells, ME
English original oil painting on canvas "Retrieving the Grog Before the Storm"; signed lower left: Thomas LUNY; and indistinctly dated--only a "2" is discernable. This dramatic painting depicts ships outward bound while smugglers in the foreground heave their small boat to shore while others roll a barrel of grog to safety. The sea is building while the white cliffs and stone fortress at the entrance to a harbor stand firm against the impending storm. This is quintessential Luny, displaying his deft handling of the ocean and the exposition of coastal life in the early 19th century. We have had this painting cleaned, rebacked and restored by Northeast Painting Conservation, York, Maine.
Thomas Luny (1759-1837), was born in Cornwall but moved to London at an early age and was raised there by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth. Thomas' father is thought to have been employed in some activity at the London Docks and from thence the younger Thomas was exposed to the maritime world from an early age. He is thought to have been apprenticed to the London artist Francis Holman...

A rare, late-18th century, silk, embroidered, double hemisphere, world map, blackwork, sampler, showing the tracks of captain cook’s three voyages
- Illustrating public understanding of the world in the late-18th century and the recent discoveries of the time delineating the tracks of Captain Cook’s three voyages.
- Shows the incentive for further exploration during the 19th century as no mass is indicated within the southern polar region, the interior portions of western North America, Africa, and Australia are still relatively void of detail even though California is no longer shown as an island.
- Includes beautifully worked allegories of the four continents Asia, the Americas, Africa & Europe, a cartouche being supported by two angels and a compass
- The cream, silk ground is finely embroidered with a variety of stiches in black, silk threads emulating the black ink on maps.

Floral Bouquet engraved after Louis Tessier for "Livre de Corbeilles et Vases de Fleurs"
Engraved by Jean-Jacques Avril
Spring Bouquet with Ranunculus and Tulip.
Measures: 36.4 x 27.7 cm
"Avril l'aine, Sculp", in text, lower right; "L. Tessier, del" lower right.
The six plates for "Livre de Corbeilles et Vases de Fleurs" (A Book of Baskets and Vases of Flowers) were engraved by J.J. Avril after paintings by Louis Tessier. The plates were hand colored and the coloring varies from impression to impression.
This impression is a beautiful example of Tessier's eye for design, with his elegant use of space and the vivid color combinations by Avril. Despite the formality of the still life, the fun, haphazard arrangement of these fantastic flowers makes for a charming yet highly stylized image.
Jean Jaacques Avril (the elder) was born in Paris in 1744 and studied architecture but became a student of engraver Jan Georges...

Large Oval Coade Stone Patera
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
In classic architecture, a large patera (or paterae plural) like this would have once embellished a frieze or wall of a prominent building or house. This oval patera is a beautiful example of 18th century architecture, showcasing ornate details of the period. It is made in Coade stone, a famous and innovative material of its time, developed by industry pioneer Mrs Eleanor Coade.

by Saverio Manetti
Circa 1776

Dimensions: 25 inches high x 22 inches wide x 1 1/4 inches deep. (frame); (63.5cm high x 55.88cm). 18 x 14 in. (sheet)

Manetti was born in Brozzi to Giovanni Bernardo and Maria Teresa Nesiscolt of Prague. His early studies were in Florence and later at Pisa where he studied botany under Pier Antonio Micheli. He graduated in medicine in 1745 and worked in Florence. In 1758 he joined the National Medical College where he studied anatomy under Antonio Cocchi (1695–1758), conducting the autopsy of Cocchi.
Manetti was Professor of Botany of the "Società Botanica Fiorentina", a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, a Fellow of the Royal Society, learned societies in Göttingen and Montpellier, an Accademico dell'Istituto di Bologna and he maintained scientific contacts with the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus and with the main scientific circles of the second half of the 18th century.
He was supervisor of the Orto Botanico di Firenze in Florence from 1749 to 1782 succeeding to Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti and Secretary of the Accademia dei Georgofili. With remarkable organizational effort, he secured the publication of Storia naturale degli uccelli, Natural History of the birds, a monumental work in five volumes illustrated with 600 hand-coloured engravings based on watercolor paintings.
The book was commissioned by Maria Luisa, Grand duchess of Tuscany and the first volume was dedicated to Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. The third volume was dedicated to Ferdinando di Brobone and the fourth to Giorgio Nassau Clavering. The engravings were made by Tuscan abbot and engraver Lorenzo Lorenzi and Violante Vanni who had studied under British engraver Robert Strange...

Rudolph Ackermann, London, 1815.
Thomas Rowlandson: Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. After studying in both Paris and London, Thomas Rowlandson began his career as a portrait painter. By 1782, however, he devoted himself almost exclusively to his first love; caricature and satirical art. After receiving a large inheritance, Thomas Rowlandson quickly gambled it away. After losing his fortune at a thirty-six hour card game he is known to have exclaimed, "I've played the fool, but (holding up his pencils) here is my resource."
Working with such British publishers as Flores and Thomas Tegg, Thomas Rowlandson designed many memorable satires. His greatest work, however, lay ahead in the early nineteenth century when he collaborated with the famous London publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, to produce some of the finest satirical series in the history of art. These included The Microcosm of London (1808), the Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812) and The English Dance of Death...
