While jadeite jade may bask in most of the glory, the nephrite variety of jade has been held in the highest esteem for thousands of years, valued as both a tool and a jewel. Throughout Chinese history, tougher-than-steel nephrite was carved into bowls, ax heads, even chains which were attached to carts and pulled by horses to transport heavy building materials. And the spectacular "Imperial Jade" worn by members of the Chinese Imperial courts was inevitably nephrite, not jadeite. Once you feel this dense, heavy 26.5" long strand of very finely grained, black-forest green nephrite beads around your neck, you will immediately appreciate why so many people throughout history have valued nephrite such as this above all other gems. These seventy-nine 7.20 mm beads are consistent in color and quality to the fine old green material from the jade mines in Xingjiang, China. A yellow gold ball clasp completes the necklace and is marked "585," the European fineness stamp to indicate 14k gold. From a distance, the ball clasp appears to have a machined texture of fine lines running around its circumference. When viewed under magnification, it is instantly apparent that each fine line has been meticulously, individually hand-engraved by a highly skilled and highly patient goldsmith with a steadiness of hand any surgeon would envy. And I ask, who but the Italians could create such a clasp? The tongue of the clasp is also marked, rather unhelpfully, with a squiggle that appears to be an "S" maker's mark. If you have longed for an imperial jade necklace but balked at the pesky seven-figure price tag that accompanies it, this magnificent strand of deep, glossy vintage nephrite beads may be just exactly what you require. It is such a luxury to feel them around your neck. And far from being a "substitute" for jadeite jade, nephrite this fine is a treasure unto itself.
