RARE VICTORIAN VULCANITE GRAPE CHOKER NECKLACE ca. 1860
Located in New York, NY
This piece is so special and so rare: it dates to the Victorian era, more specifically the 1860s, and was likely made in Britain. It is crafted from vulcanite and features a teardrop shape with a high relief bunch of grapes in intricate detail, surrounded by a border of carved beads, strung on a fine black ribbon, to be worn as choker. (I love it strung on the Victorian Jet Choker pictured, which is also available in my shop.) The vulcanite has this truly stunning, relatively matte finish, with a rich warm glow— it's just so unique and unlike any other material. What is vulcanite? It is made by combining the sap of the Euphorbia or Ficus trees from Malaysia, with sulphur. It was originally invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock. His timing just happened to be spot-on: black had long been considered essential to mourning jewelry and mourning dress, but thanks to Queen Victoria's extended 40 years of grieving (for her husband, Prince Albert), from about 1860-1890, black was considered a highly fashionable color, and began to be worn outside mourning dress. During this period, vulcanite became a very fashionable material for jewelry, and it loaned objects that gothic, romantic, dramatic black cast that Victorians just loved. Victorian mourning jewelry is rife with grape motifs; for one, grapes were a symbols of Christ (as wine is the blood of Christ). On Victorian grave markers, a cluster of grapes typically means that the deceased was of mature years. Victorians are well known for using flowers and botanicals as a means of communication. Wild grapes, according to The Language of Flowers published in 1913, are symbols of Charity, a favorite Victorian theme. NOTE: The Victorian Hair Mourning...

Vintage Original French Medal Pendant Gold Plated Chain Necklace
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Vintage Original Marquis shaped Medal Pendant The medal has the phrase "Je suis l'Immaculée Conception" in French and translates to "I am the Immaculate Conception". The term "Immaculate Conception" refers to a doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, which holds that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. This is a unique privilege granted to Mary, as all other human beings, according to Christian doctrine, are conceived with original sin as a result of the Fall of Man. This medal could serve as a symbol of faith, a tool for prayer, or a reminder of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. The phrase "Je suis l'Immaculée Conception" is reportedly what Mary said to Bernadette Soubirous during the apparitions at Lourdes, France, in 1858. Therefore, such a medal may also have a particular connection to the Marian devotion associated with Lourdes. On the other side of the medal it has the date 8th of December 1933 engraved which is a significant date in Catholic tradition as it is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day that celebrates the doctrine that Mary was conceived without original sin. The year 1933 marked the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX, which was on December 8, 1854. A medal bearing this date could have been created to commemorate this significant milestone. It also says "S. Bernadette PPN Navars" which likely refers to Saint Bernadette...

Aquamarine Heart Medal Chain Necklace Virgin del Carmen Gold Filled J Dauphin
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Aquamarine Heart Set on a Medal with Virgin del Carmen on Chain Necklace that is Gold Filled Length: 28" can be worn shorter The Medal itself is in Bronze and the prong is in silver meanwhile chain is Gold Filled Designer: J Dauphin Symbols or medals can become a powerful tool in our arsenal for the spiritual. Since ancient times spiritual pendants, religious medals has been used to protect us. During challenging times, such as today, humanity must come together as a collective of mind and soul through a shared action of love and compassion. With a desire to (re)build confidence and (re)find faith and spirituality within, a medal can become a symbol to help us cope with the uncertain reality and create a sense of spiritual protection and remembrance to hold compassion in our hearts. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or Virgin of Carmel, is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order, particularly within the Catholic Church. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to mid-13th century. They built in the midst of their hermitages a chapel which they dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, whom they conceived of in chivalric terms as the "Lady of the place." Our Lady of Mount Carmel was adopted in the 19th century as the patron saint of Chile. Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has centered on the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Brown Scapular. The Carmelite Order was the only religious order to be started in the Crusader States. In the 13th century, some of its people migrated west to England, setting up a chapter and being documented there about 1241–1242. A tradition first attested to in the late 14th century says that Simon Stock, believed to be an early English prior general of the Carmelite Order soon after its migration to England, had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in which she gave him the Brown Scapular. This formed part of the Carmelite habit after 1287. In Stock's vision, Mary promised that those who died wearing the scapular would be saved. This is a devotional sacramental signifying the wearer's consecration to Mary and affiliation with the Carmelite order. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The Carmelites consider the Blessed Virgin Mary to be a perfect model of the interior life of prayer and contemplation to which Carmelites aspire, as well as a model of virtue, in the person who was closest in life to Jesus Christ. She is seen as the one who points Christians most surely to Christ. As she says to the servants at the wedding at Cana, "Do whatever he [Jesus] tells you." Carmelites look to the Virgin Mary as a Spiritual Mother. The Stella Maris Monastery (Star of the Sea...

Vintage Pendant Necklaces

Whether you’re layering multiple jewelry pieces or opting for a single strand, vintage pendant necklaces are versatile accessories that can elevate your casual wear as easily as they can add a creative flourish to your formal attire.

The earliest jewelry was less about accessorizing than it was about wearers arming themselves with amulets. In Ancient Egypt, some amulets featured a loop so that they could be strung around one’s neck. While rubies have long been one of the few gemstones that can give diamonds a run for their money, members of some ancient civilizations valued the stones from the get-go, donning ruby pendants as well as other stones with the belief that these adornments would bring protection, healing powers or strength. Today, we still wear our charm bracelets and charm pendants around our necks for good luck.

Later, pendant necklaces, like most fine jewelry, were worn strictly by royalty or the upper class and conferred wealth and prestige. This changed over time, thankfully, as wearing jewelry became more widespread, a democratized means of personal expression.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, pendant necklaces evolved from their status as spiritual amulets, but the jewels still carried deep personal significance. Victorian pendants, in particular, were part of the “mourning jewelry” tradition. Wearers would embed their pendants with locks of hair from a deceased loved one as a way of grieving in the wake of a loss. In the case of cameo jewelry, some pendants were even decorated with miniature hand-carved portraits in a detailed raised relief. Today, portraiture is still a characteristic of many of the hand-carved pendant necklaces offered by Italian jewelry house Scala Gioielli.

Luxury fine jewelry brands such as Cartier, BVLGARI and David Yurman offer their own unique interpretations of the cherished accessory, embellishing platinum or gold pendant necklaces with diamonds, sapphires and other stones.
