Specializing in traditional Navajo cluster work, Navajo silversmith Betty Tom was born & raised in Thoreau, NM. Betty started silversmithing right after high school, learning by watching her father. Mother of three and Grandmother of four, Betty still lives in Thoreau, and continues to provide the Southwest with collectible turquoise and silver jewelry.

Sterling silver necklace by Navajo silversmith Leon Martinez. The adjustable 30-35” necklace featuring fine stamp and applique work is set with high grade Royston Turquoise. Each of the twelve 7/8” x 1 1/4” hand stamped stations display a 3/8” x 1/2” Royston cabochon. The 1 3/4” x 2” bottom pendant has ten Royston cabochons surrounding a 1/2” x 3/4” Royston stone.
Royston is known for its beautiful colors ranging from deep green to rich, light blues with a brown matrix. While Royston is considered an active mine; it is a very small operation. Royston is a district in Nevada consisting of three turquoise mines: Bunker Hill, Oscar Wehrend, and the main producer, high quality Royal Blue. The mine in Nevada is still producing high quality turquoise but in limited amounts.

The Lone Mountain Turquoise Mine is located in Esmeralda County, Nevada. This turquoise is known for its ability to hold color and not fade. Lone Mountain turquoise ranges in color from clear blue to intense blue spiderweb. The mine is also known as the Blue Jay Mine. Lone Mountain turquoise ranks higher than most other turquoise on the hardness scale, which may explain one of the unique qualities of these stones.
About the Artist
Fidel Bahe was born in 1949 at Keams Canyon, Arizona. He is the firstborn of eight children--two sisters and five brothers. He studied architecture and engineering at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff before taking up silversmithing at the age of 24. Terry Martinez, award-winning Navajo artist from New Mexico, has been an active silversmith for well over 30 years. Terry carries on the famed Martinez clan's devotion to the creation of traditional design jewelry in the style of previous generations. Using only the finest turquoise, Terry adapts the ingot style, rolled and hand pounded techniques to create some of the most striking jewelry in Indian Country. Everything is made by hand.
